Liverpool (A) Post Match Thread

There is that, but I want him to do his main job of saving the very few chances we give up.

He'll be in danger of entering Bravo territory in terms of goals to chances faced.

He made a good stop from Jota, and as you said he didn't do anything wrong for the Mané goal. I'm still not convinced he was at fault for Salah's goal either. Maybe someone else throws a hand up at a slightly different angle a split second earlier and gets something on it, but I really wouldn't expect them to

He did royally fuck up that cross for the Fabinho chance though

He's statistically the best goalkeeper in the league at claiming crosses and corners so I don't care about the chance at the end, it's a one off.

In fact in this very game there were a couple of crosses which drew praise from the commentators because they just stick. No punching or flailing at it, he just comes and grabs the ball.

Ploddy is a good way of describing Laporte.

What we lose through not having Laporte utilising his crossfield pass, we gain more solidity of Dias is playing on the left.

Especially so, as Stones brings us more options into midfield.

I'd say Laporte remains a very good defender but he seems to struggle mentally in the biggest of games?

Having watched that Salah goal back again, I'm disappointed with Eddie, he should be getting a hand to it at least.
Agree about Ederson, i said it at the time. When Salah shoots his right arm is in front of his body for some strange reason (his left arm in a more normal position) and he cant get it out quick enough because of it. If his starting point was his arm by his side, he’d have kept it out IMO

I don’t know the stats but I would have thought Ederson shots to saves ratio would be around 90%.

Harsh on Ederson, both brilliant goals and finishes.

Laporte is so slow it's untrue, he gets caught far too often, still a very good CB, but not the same player since his injury for me and not one you want in the trenches when the bullets are flying.

We haven't seen Stones yet this season though so it's Laporte's place at the moment and i really can't see how he can be dropped.
Also as you said about Cancelo's defending, because he isn't the best (even though he was up against Salah and had a brilliant first half) Laporte has to keep an eye on the wing too. For the most part i think he has been brilliant so far this season.

You also have to factor in the quality of games that we played last week.
I can't remember a time when we played, arguably three of the top 5 teams in Europe away from home in one week. The players must be mentally and physically exhausted after that and to maintain the quality of play, where we were the best team in all three games, was phenomonal.

I agree about Eddie though, even in the PSG game i thought he could've at least made an effort with Messi's goal.

You can tell we’ve got the two hardest away games out of the way early in the season and come away from them unbeaten and with four precious points in the bag.
It’s time for the regular “slag a City player, any City player, it doesn’t matter who” game of “I’m a top top blue, I can criticise and critique way more harshly than you” that we see every year. Right up to the point where we win yet another trophy, then it quietens off until the summer and starts again around august.

Yep he's a colossus on crosses. My point was more that the missed cross was an actual mistake, unlike either of the goals

First goal can go either way, Eddie is racing out of his goal and, on another day, could get something on Mane's shot.

But Salah's shot with his weaker right comes right across the face of his goal and hits the opposite corner of his net.

The ball has travelled a fair distance and not the first time Eddie needs to take a look at himself on his front post.

The Red Bull game was another game where you start to realise Eddie isn't a shot stopper.

If it weren't for Rodri, we'd all be livid with him today.

I think that Salah shot was really travelling and it would have been amazing reflexes from Eddie to stop it; although maybe he was a bit tight to his post; I've haven't re-watched since MoTD2 last night though.

Being pedantic, but Eddie is a decent shot stopper; however, he is not exceptional and doesn't look to have a string of miracle saves in him the way say Joe Hart did at his best. The rest of his game ranges from excellent to exceptional / perhaps the best ever.

I think he has improved on how he deals with crosses and yesterday's faux pas was the exception rather than the rule. He got caught in traffic; it happens. Balls coming in like that one can be quite hard to judge.

This morning the BBC's headline was that Liverpool had been held by City. I don't remember Liverpool being rampant at any time and I think the present story about Liverpool getting away with it is rather more faithful to the actual match. I do accept that Liverpool have a front three capable of scoring goals without seeing much of the ball but this doesn't make them anything like as good a team as City. We saw the difference in class and quality between their midfield and ours and their (Van Dijk inspired) defence seemed a way behind City's. They are PSG Mark 11 and as we found last Tuesday, and nearly did again yesterday, they can get a result in a single game. They would certainly be a threat in a CL game. Over 38 games though I think City have a massive edge but also the longer the season goes the more likely City are to prevail in one off games, so perhaps it's lucky both have got their "good result" against us out of the way so early.

He was holding his achy tummy

Salahs finish is the same as Fodens. When hit with their power, they may look savable but they arent.

I think Ederson's defensive game is erratic at times. Very brave but he does have a mistake in him which we saw yesterday with the miracle block from Rodri.

But I wouldn't swap him because of the offensive side of his game. No other keeper has this dimension to his game...remember the pass to Foden. Alisson pass the ball straight to one of our players in the 1st half and if you press him he has loads of errors in him with his kicking. No one talks about this because City are just about the only team that press Liverpool. Remember last season's game at Anfield?

Maradona-esque goal it has to be said, but we bossed that game and schooled the scousers like no other team can. We should have scored 5 minimum. Phil head and shoulders the best player on the pitch - always plays superbly against that lot. Rodri’s clearance defied logic and the laws of physics - even more so than Stones’ immense goal-line clearance a few years ago. Hopefully the Blue Moaners can now appreciate Rodri a little more.
