I read the other day about cabotage and that Polish firms account for 25% of European haulage, constantly shuffling produce and goods from within country and between countries, so doing the job of 4 or 5 drivers if this European network didn’t exist.
What I didn’t know was that the EU limited UK hauliers to only two jobs maximum within the EU under the trade deal, so we restricted EU drivers to two jobs thereby eliminating the capacity of EU drivers to take three or four jobs within the UK before heading back to Europe with a full load (now it’s often an empty load).
Add in these restrictions, the hassle of EU customs, the poor facilities here for drivers and you can see why holes are appearing.
Makes you question the genius behind the thinking to build massive lorry parks in Kent - they clearly had little or no concept of the impact of what they were trying to implement and had zero fucking clue about how supply works
