You know this is becoming a circlejerk when people are rushing in to criticise him tonight. He was fine - good even.

Got his assist, played a lovely ball to put Grealish through 1v1 which should have been another and disappointing he didn't get the goal but he kept going, kept busting a gut to get in positions to score and if he plays like that every week he'll be in the starting XI because eventually they'll start going in again. Just needed a bit of luck today like Walker got with his.

Close this thread. I wonder who the next scapegoat is when he leaves. Reminds me of the Sané times.

So dangerous on the break since he came on got and assist few other good passes but he should forget about trying to score just be the assist man that’s how he will get back in the side being selfless putting ball on a plate for his team.

Thought he did well tonight, apart from the finishing. If he keeps getting into those situations the goals will come.

I understand people say he was good tonight etc but it’s a situation in which you can only call it a success if he scores for me. And he didn’t.

There's no such situation. You can play well without a goal, you can play poorly with a goal.
Definitely. But being wasteful takes away from the performance. And right now he needs more than just movement if he wants a starting spot guarantee

without the ball - 10/10

with the ball - 2/10

5v1 and he goes it alone, shoots straight at the keeper. shoots the rebound with an empty net wide.
another tap in 1v1 with the keeper. manages to mishit it so bad it goes to a throw in.
another chance, gets put clean through on goal. miscontrols the ball, has to go with his left, straight at the keeper

the fact he got all those chances are amazing, and something none of our players really managed today. but then the problems starts when he has to do something with the ball.

He would have scored two or three tap ins in the first half when we were tearing them to shreds and rolling it across the face of goal. However, the reason we were tearing them to shreds was because everyone’s touch was superb and we kept and recycled possession quickly. With Sterling in the starting eleven, we would be less effective at doing that because of his touch and control.

Sterling‘s skills are better suited to exploiting tired teams and the space that creates, which means that now he is ostensibly a rather expensive substitute.

Sterling, a player that now divides opinions.

Sounds like when we had Nasri. I always thought Nasri was a great foil to Silva, but I remembered some here at the time was already slagging him off, even before when he was labelled a coward because he turned his head away that led to conceding a goal. That's when it all started. Every week Nasri had his critics.

I'm not going to criticise Raheem here, but I believe it is time to sell him if we're not getting a striker in. I just don't see him playing well without a striker up front to pull the defenders away from him.

Yeah always selling under their market price. Sterling is 80M. There‘s no many good wingers out there. Mcatee isn‘t even a winger. Why does everyone want central midfielders to replace our wingers?

From the little I saw from Mcatee, he keeps the ball well under pressure, can dribble and clinical.

I am not sure If Pep will ask for more.
