To be fair, until tonight we hadn't seen a single good false 9 performance all season and saw very very few over the last two years.
not really he has been playing well all season there. this performance midweek was even better than today.

Has he though? He played in midfield vs Wycombe, wasn't great vs Chelsea or Burnley and mostly played on the left vs Liverpool. I'll give you the Brugge game which I forgot he played centrally for (though even then his goal involvement came from when he dropped deeper). In general it's still true to say that whoever plays false 9 for us usually doesn't get a chance to do much.

all the games you mentioned he played his role well. but the issue was with the rest of the team. rather than giving him the ball to his feet, they were pumping it up field for him to win headers or putting in crosses in the air. imo the team has actually now adjusted better with playing to him that is why the performance looks better false 9.

His ability to performe and improve in any position he's played in is absolutely amazing.

There is no such thing as a false 9. its such a stupid term . Its a no 10 . Its playing in the hole and linking midfield to attack .Being the playmaker.

We are essentially playing without a forward and it will cost us .

lol so you are telling the manager who introduced the false 9 in the modern game there is no false 9 position haha good one.

It's the essentially the same thing . Your basically playing a no 10 instead of a striker . I don't agree with it . Unless you have Messi, xavi and inesta in your team and you are able to completely dominate the ball, which city are far from doing.

Against the bigger teams like Liverpool, Chelsea, it won't work.

Ahh yes, those two teams we just played away from home and dominated both games, taking 4 points?

Why will it cost us????

Im pretty certain we were 3 wins away from winning the fucking lot last season & we played pretty much all season without a striker

We've played both of those teams off the park in the last month away from home. I've read some bollocks on here in the past but you've exceeded it all with that post.

I sort of agree with the point you’re making. You’re just being an asshole and digging yourself a hole with it won’t win the CL or against top sides. It most definitely works, you’d be insane thinking that it can’t / doesn’t work.

Personally, the data in relations to City over the last 10 years says that having a WC striker doesn’t affect results like you would think it would. In general, we won more points when Kelechi was in over Sergio and when Gabby slots in there wasn’t a drop off either. Same with the false nine. The ‘striker’ in City system ranks last between the false 8’s and wingers in terms of importanceA striker genuinely only gets a few important touches / chances per game and the total value of having a total footballer in that position out weights the gains you get from having a pure striker.

The position is vastly overrated if you have a squad full of total footballers. Pep is proving this is optimal.

**Having said that. I’d love to see what Pep does next if he extends and gets Haaland.

he is learning so quickly the new position. he just need to have more composure 1on1 then he will an incredible amount of goals.

I remember clearly seeing him play for the first time when he played against the Rags in a preseason friendly in the US. That performance suggested we had a very special player coming through. His progress to date has done nothing to dim the initial impression. Not going to speculate on just how good he will end up being but I do believe he is the best young player that I have seen at City in the last 50 years.
