Coronavirus (2021) thread

It's going to be really interesting to see whether there's a huge spike in numbers tomorrow as everyone who is due back to school tomorrow (teachers and students) will be doing tests tonight.

He says having just logged 3 negative tests on the government website!

So far we've only administered 50% of the eligible boosters. Which isn't good.

Distinct lack of focus and urgency all round on Covid.

Hopefully it is starting to crank up. I got a text from my GP surgery last week saying I would be eligible for the booster this week and I'm booked in on Tuesday, the first day I'm eligible.

It has been very clunky so far, with very elderly people having to wait for a text and no possibility to book in without one. That has changed.

UK

74 deaths - was 72 last week

59 in England - was 34 last week - bit of a rise here

38, 009 cases - was 39, 962 last week - down 1953

England only

31, 479 - down 4725 on yesterday & 1842 on yesterday

NORTH WEST

3863 cases - DOWN 661 on yesterday & UP 85 on last Sundays 3778

GREATER MANCHESTER

1396 cases today -. DOWN 139 of that 661 NW fall on yesterday. Which is less good than yesterday and a bit under expectation for a fall.

36.1% of the NW total - a higher split than yesterday's 33.9% - though that was unusually good and 36% is about the recent norm. So these numbers are OK given the day to day way the numbers fluctuate.

Versus last week - UP 194 from 1202 - More than double the entire NW rise. Not so good. But we are again talking small numbers and daily case fluctuations so nothing significant unless it becomes a trend.

The split then was 31.8% GM v NW so todays 36.1% is well up. But that 31.8% was unusually low last week.

Manchester top scored on 209 - UP 38 on last week

Oldham was the lowest scorer on 80 - DOWN 9 on last wk

IN BETWEEN

Stockport 179 - UP 7 on wk, Wigan 170 - UP 31 on wk, Trafford 151 - DOWN 5 on wk,Tameside 138 - UP 38 on wk Bury 125 - UP 50 on last wk, Salford 122 - UP 29 on wk,Bolton 113 -UP 23 on wk,
Rochdale 109 - DOWN 8 on last wk,

Less good day for Stockport but not the worst and the smallest of the seven week to week rises that created that larger than par week to week rise & with a Pop Score of 61 which gains another 3 back on Trafford's 64 and so in the overall lowest pop score across the pandemic is now 356 ahead.

Only Oldham, Rochdale and Trafford are down week to week and all by just single numbers

Bury, Manchester and Tameside up the most week to week.

The boosters are harder to do as they require a 15 minute wait afterwards so limit the numbers they can do in one go inside a centre I expect. Am told there have been long waits outside for your appointment which will deter some by word of mouth.

This never happened with either of my AZ jabs in February and April but I have been told will be the case next week with Pfizer as a booster. So it is something you cannot easily plan around.

It also means I cannot walk to the facility and have to travel some distance (several miles) by bus or taxi to the only option within miles caused by the Pfizer strorage limitations and do not have a mobile and have to call them tomorrow to find out if they will book a return cab for me. As I cannot ask the cab to wait an unknown time and the centre is in a fairly out of the way spot off main roads to flag one down.

This makes it much more of a problem I suspect for those who would find this even harder than I do to plan around.

I would say so far getting this has invoved about 3 times as much effort as either of the other two or the flu jab because of its special needs. I will do what it takes as I have the time but very possibly some will think they will just wait until it is more wodely available. Though it may never be.

Also not sure about the dfference between Pfizer and Moderna as both seem to be being used.

So I can understand some will be a little more reticent this time around as it looks like more of a faff than last time.

In the Netherlands, you had to wait 15 minutes after each of your first two vaccinations (Pfizer/Moderna/AZ) or 30 minutes if you had a complicated medical history or allergies.

No idea why people get so exercised about exactly what is posted as long as it's not the conspiracy nut jobs. I appreciate some of the local stats @Healdplace brings, and it's no problem to skip whatever doesn't interest me. I prefer everything together rather than separate threads, but not massively arsed either way.

Anyway, speaking of conspiracy nutjobs, the JCVI have issued minutes of their last few meetings (much later than they normally do...).

A seriously dysfunctional group who actually discussed whether using children as a vector for adult infection with delta would be a good thing. Which is about as unethical as it's possible to be.

Should be a major scandal.

Ethical? You're talking about a reality that existed before social media. We're getting rid of all that now.

Why bother with the thousands of years of research and argument on what is and isn't a good idea, when you can use the internet to check the first reaction of millions of people? Everyone's an expert, you know.

It’s the same in the UK.

The advice comes from the vaccine companies

It might be advice but not sure how often it is followed.

I have had three injections since February - the two AZ and my flu jab - at two different venues - and each one was in and out like a conveyor belt. Not even 15 seconds wait. Let alone minutes. They had someone on the back door showing you out straight after the jab and someone on the front letting someone else in the moment you were out.
