Coronavirus (2021) thread

It might be advice but not sure how often it is followed.

I have had three injections since February - the two AZ and my flu jab - at two different venues - and each one was in and out like a conveyor belt. Not even 15 seconds wait. Let alone minutes. They had someone on the back door showing you out straight after the jab and someone on the front letting someone else in the moment you were out.

.
15 minutes was never recommended as a wait for AZ, only the MRNA vaccines.

Is it at the discretion of each province to decide who receives a booster shot?
Yes. Each province operates separately and has their own guidelines.
Even in Ontario the vaccine eligibility was different in each "health unit" and then broken down further depending on postal codes.
As of tomorrow I will be able to get a flu shot. No mention of a covid booster shot for the general public as of yet.

By the way the numbers on Zoe do seem to be starting to go down now too. Both ongoing cases and predicted cases have fallen the last day or two since my last report.Salford took over as top borough in GM today. Stockport is now fifth and Cheshire East (sorry Andyhinch) has shot right up again and is almost 30K and well above all of GM and its neighbour Cheshire West.

For all the people who don’t seem to understand why the vaccine booster roll out is not going as quickly as they seem to expect, a few reasons.
1. The government and their advisors dithered as to whether it was going to do boosters or not, with final decisions not being made until the second week in September.
2. Meanwhile, the primary vaccine programme was running out of steam with many centre's open and very few people turning up. An over supply, if you like.
3. Planning started for phase 3 (boosters) but nobody knew what they were actually planning for. Would it be over 80’s, over 70’s, 60’s or 50’s. What about children (definitely not was the line)?
4. Vaccination centres started to close down as many were costing money and also wanted to go back to their primary purpose.
5. Primary care meanwhile was being told it was useless and needed to prioritise seeing patients.
6. Booster decision comes in for over 50’s and clinically vulnerable. Priority is decided to be care homes, done by GP’S!
7. Problem there is that they’ve been told to do their ‘real job’ and, all the boosters are MRNA vaccines and need a 15 minute observation, not straight in and out, like first time round with AZ.
8. People have not been coming forward in the numbers hoped for and people aren’t allowed to book before 190 days after jab number 2 happened.
9. All this is 3 weeks after the decision to jab 16/17 year olds.
10. One week after the booster programme is started, 12-15 year olds can be jabbed.

The workforce expected to do all this is the same one, only it’s now much smaller than 6 months ago and there are less places to do it in. GP’s aren’t terribly interested in the main, and who can blame them?

The reason for the comparatively slower uptake of the boosters is mainly to do with some reticence on the part of the population and the various logistics involved.

Finally, an announcement on 40-49 year olds wouldn’t be a great surprise next week..

When I had my 2nd AZ they made me wait and after about 10 mins I was chatting to someone who had just had theirs and was also waiting and mentioned I had the AZ one. When the nurse monitoring those waiting heard that she told me I didn’t need to wait if id had AZ, that was just Pfizer which they were also doing there.

I can expect that happened a lot. There was much early confusion over these things I imagine as decisions about them were being made on the fly and we were learning best practice as we went along and even the basics of what to do best as all of this was so new and sped up beyond what would normally happen, But had to be addressed as we moved out of necessity.

Thus far, just 50% of the rate. Desperately needs to accelerate.
It’s actually not as bad as you think at the minute. The 6 month thing is far from exact (between 6-8 months has been the working assumption for a while) and 190 days is effectively the timeframe being used.
That takes us to April 23 by which time just over 10 million people had had 2 jabs. We are currently at 6.7 million which is 67% of all those who are eligible. Out of the remaining ones, some will sadly be dead, so will have moved house and May still be waiting to be contacted, as the website had told them to, some will not have had chance or been able to book an appointment and some will still be deciding, so I do think it’s better than you suggest.
Many local pharmacies have now joined in and more and more are coming on stream every day

Finally, for the systems that were very good at the start, their numbers being added to the total will start to fall in November, which will start to make the task much easier.

Not planning to publish tables of Pop Scores for Greater Manchester again but there were some significant changes today worth mentioning. So I will only refer to these numbers when something big changes like this.

Oldham took over as the best in GM on 270 now Manchester is rising and Bury took over from both Trafford and Stockport after two or three weeks with them way ahead of the rest.

Bury has clocked up some high numbers in recent days to become the worst in GM and now above both those two. The media will likely notice this in a few days on the 5 day old numbers they use.

Perhaps the chancellor should have checked Blue Moon before going to Bury Market Friday and then telling the cameras he was in the famous Burnley Market.

Bury now easily the one going up the most in GM at the moment and on 467 - just topping the falling Traffords 465. Stockport's 455 & Tameside's 452.

A big change to the huge gap between Trafford and the rest 2 weeks ago.

The boosters are harder to do as they require a 15 minute wait afterwards so limit the numbers they can do in one go inside a centre I expect. Am told there have been long waits outside for your appointment which will deter some by word of mouth.

This never happened with either of my AZ jabs in February and April but I have been told will be the case next week with Pfizer as a booster. So it is something you cannot easily plan around.

It also means I cannot walk to the facility and have to travel some distance (several miles) by bus or taxi to the only option within miles caused by the Pfizer strorage limitations and do not have a mobile and have to call them tomorrow to find out if they will book a return cab for me. As I cannot ask the cab to wait an unknown time and the centre is in a fairly out of the way spot off main roads to flag one down.

This makes it much more of a problem I suspect for those who would find this even harder than I do to plan around.

I would say so far getting this has invoved about 3 times as much effort as either of the other two or the flu jab because of its special needs. I will do what it takes as I have the time but very possibly some will think they will just wait until it is more wodely available. Though it may never be.

Also not sure about the dfference between Pfizer and Moderna as both seem to be being used.

So I can understand some will be a little more reticent this time around as it looks like more of a faff than last time.
Took my mum who is 90 for her third jab on Friday afternoon her appointment was at 2.35pm, it was absolutely pissing it down, you have to wait outside under a plastic cover for your turn, they were just letting one or two people at a time in, after waiting 20 minutes outside I ask the security guy what the hold up was, he said its because everyone has to stay seated for 15 minutes after the jab wouldnt have been bothered if was me waiting outside in really bad conditions, but to have a frail 90 year old and other elderly people waiting outside was out of order, especially as the building has loads of empty rooms

Are the 3rd "booster jabs" mandatory for your vaccine certificate to be valid (having had the first 2)?

I'm assuming at some point they will be once fully rolled out but just checking...
