not really, as the vast majority who would get turned down would still try to cross. Unless your answer is to let everyone in...If we set up a workable asylum system that acts quickly and humanely that would go a long way to resolving them - the UK broken Govt's system has in effect created the business of people smuggling. If there is a workable accessible system set up then nobody would need smugglers and the business model we have developed for them would be bust.

what would be the criteria needed for a successful application into the UK ?
would there ever be a limit on numbers ? Say thousands applying every day ?
I think it would be a good idea to treat people smugglers and migrants crossing as two seperate issues? why are you scared of people who look, sound and practise a different religion to you?

The big issue here is that every view by government is very short term. they dont see the long term cost, the divisiveness and the way it makes the UK look.
Until there is a worldwide acceptance of the problem and an agreement for every country to "take their share" then you will have people traffickers making millions out of others misfortune.
What we are paying the French is never going to be enough and for every arrival the cost just slowly multiplies for the taxpayer.
Yes, you can look to tackle the trafficking and try and remove a little of the exploitation but you also need to do as AHT suggests and set up a system where claims can be made abroad.
Start with an amnesty and wipe clean the backlogs, create lawful, working people that can contribute to society...also taking money away from the leaching solicitors and saving the legal aid budget.
Stick the 50+million we are giving to the French into an asylum application centre in Northern France. If successful then welcome, if refused and you still seek to enter then automatic return to France.
The only winners at present are the OCGs making huge amounts

We could set up a system where refugees can seek asylum before setting foot in the U.K..
This would stop a lot of these crossings and horrific deaths.
I do think this is the best thing we can do.
We have to break this cycle somehow or more people will die in horrific circumstances.
