Channel deaths | Four confirmed dead after migrant boat tragically capsizes (p 41)

I realise this question has been asked by many, and often as some kind of dig, but I have yet to have ever read any real explanation of it.

Basically, as refugees, desperate to escape their war torn countries, they are looking for safe places to move to. France, (similarly to several others they have traveled across) is surely no less 'safe' than the UK. So why do they put themselves at such risk from the actual crossings, and the evil bastids taking their money to do so?

I think it’s because they want to come here. I have no issue with that whatsoever, we should be proud that people do want to see this as their home. The problem is that they can’t make a case for coming here unless they are actually here - if they could rock up at the British embassy and apply I imagine the vast majority would do that. Heck we could even covered their transport costs to arrive here - you know make them feel welcome and that we are by and large a decent bunch.

Why? You would turn away people who are being persecuted or have been bombed out of their homes etc??

You mean from France?

What's your way to deal with this situation apart from let everyone in and forgo silly things like passports or checks to see who they are?

But our system of applying for asylum is fucking bonkers mate. It literally makes no sense and belongs to a bygone era. We have to accept some responsibility here.

Yup, we need to change it, as someone mentioned change the way people apply for it from outside of the UK.

But this just let anyone in nonsense just isn't flying. When we do set something more suitable up we have to decide what to do with the back door suspects when they are caught after hey have been refused asylum.

I think it would be a good idea to treat people smugglers and migrants crossing as two seperate issues? Not sure on your view point and would welcome a healthy debate but I view these as 2 very different issues.
Not sure how you come to that conclusion, people smuggling exists because of migration. Like the drugs trade the void left by a lack of regulation is easily filled by people who see easy money.

We could return them to the last country they were in under the Dublin Regulation… oh wait.

Why have you changed it to me? It's not up to me, it's up to the Tory Government. They don't want them here. If the French treated them like human beings, they'd still be alive. Hardly being bombed in Calais.
