joke . I just recovering from it called me every other day . 3 weeks off work with it . back in this week. Hope you not to bad with it Blue.
Im ok thanks mate, but yep its a joke, best part of two weeks off work with no pay and these clowns find a way to fiddle it, what happens when every other idiot cottons on to this and starts doing the same?

Granted this guy is usually quite alarmist but his stats are usually solid. Early data suggesting that this new variant is 500% more transmissible than the original strain. For scale Delta is 70%.

I've just read another post by this guy, one of the Nu cases involved a Pfizer vaccinated person and the case was only discovered during hotel PCR testing. IE, they were completely asymptomatic.

I still see no cause for alarm.

Grant Shapps just confirmed on the BBC the strategy 'if there is a new variant eventually it WILL come here'.

They do not believe they can prevent it.

They are just 'buying time' as he put it and will review the travel restrictions in 3 weeks.

Once it's out of the can and identified it's too late as thousands from Africa are travelling all over the world daily. It will be here now and instead of a full lockdown they should be locking down and testing the people who've recently returned from Africa. It's probably not going to stop it spreading but it might give a fighting chance until the danger is properly assessed

To be fair you isolate from when symptoms first started not when you received your test. He tested positive eight days ago so very well could have had symptoms a couple of days before. He is also very probably being tested two or three times per week so may have returned two negative tests already.
Since when? Maybe someone should tell the nhs this as their constant messages and calls say different

15% of all cases were Asymptomatic anyways with Covid. Not sure you can read anything into 1 case being asymptomatic at this point.

Hopefully a sign the vaccine still helped but cant tell from 1 data point.

Either way, if the reported 500% more infectious thing is accurate its going to become globally dominant in a few months so we're gonna know one way or another.

Someone in Belgium tested positive for this new strain 11 days after travelling back from Egypt so it really is only a matter of time before cases are confirmed here. Just have to hope it doesn’t cause any more serious illness than the current one, although if vaccines not as effective then it could lead to a big increase in hospital admissions and deaths again.

He was symptomless at his test so he should be isolating for 10 days from the test regardless.

I see eddie howe at Newcastle is now available after testing negative, didnt have to self isolate for ten days like the rest of us mugs, as he decided his symptoms started before he tested positive.
So heres me been stuck in a bedroom for nine days getting calls and messages from the nhs most days telling me its my legal obligation to stay home, when I could have just said I felt iffy a week before I tested positive. Sets a great example
Jason Tindall did the press conference for him and stated he was asymptomatic when he tested positive so they are quite clearly bending the rules to get him in the dug out

If 500% more infectious, will be globally dominant within a short number of weeks.

It seems very unlikely, I think that would make it more infectious than any known virus.

(Covid R~3; +500% is R~18)

Is there any chance that this will be more transmissable but less deadly? I can see why a virus would evolve to be more infective but if it is not significantly evasive that might actually be good news for humans and the virus. But we will not know that for a week or two. All we see now is the possibility of what it has that might evade the immune system.

The thought of going back 18 months amd starting over with enforced lockdown all winter is frightening as I do not see how they are going to do that successfully as people will be less responsive to that than ever regardless of this threat.

There are already people out there claiming this is being invented as the compliance was failing to try to scare people into doing things.
Those people are complete idiots and they'll never change their view, regardless of how good or bad the Covid situation is. It's pointless even engaging with them.

if it's doing that and it's showing at least some signs of asymptomatic cases in vaccinated people, then it'll burn itself out quickly. By the time you lockdown it'll be through the population.

This was recently released by Biontech on that point you raised about knowing the properties of this new variant-

BioNTech, the German company that developed the first Covid vaccine, has said it is closely studying B.1.1.529, the new variant from South Africa, and will have conclusive data from laboratory tests in two weeks at the latest.

A spokesman for the company told the German daily Bild that it would then be in a position to see whether or not its current vaccine had to be adjusted to tackle it.

The spokesman said:

Pfizer and BioNTech started several months ago to ensure that in the case of an escape variant, the mRNA vaccine can be adapted within six weeks, the first doses of which would be ready to dispatch within 100 days.
