Wouldn't even worry about that right now, lot of water to go under the bridge before thats considered.

They are not likely to understand what impact this mutation has on the vaccines for a few good weeks.
It’s all going to come down to hospital admissions, hopefully we won’t see a big increase.

From a journo

I asked a Sage adviser about the need for full plan B in England, the reply is very telling:
"If what we think we know [about Omicron] now turns out to be approximately true (and let's hope it doesn't) then Plan B won't be anywhere near stringent enough to stop this."

The way I look at it is that it is just another measure which may help to reduce transmission and so protect vulnerable people. Every little helps in my view. Keep your distance, wash your hands, wear masks indoors, take vitamin D and keep yourself as healthy as possible (ie not overweight), take the vacccines. All these things should reduce your chances of being killed by Covid (or infecting someone else). It is a pain in the arse for all of us but surely there are not many other options at present. Has anyone got any better ideas?
stop the Chinese experimenting on infectious diseases?

It will be interesting to see what the take up for masks in shops will be. Having been triple jabbed I don't see the point and I probably won't wear one.

The point is that if you are infected, it reduces the chance of you infecting others.

Being triple jabbed does not reduce your risk of infection to zero.

Wearing a mask reduces the likelihood of you infecting and killing someone vulnerable.

How difficult is it to wear a mask in a shop?

as difficult as it is to get everyone, and I mean, everyone else to wear one and thus protect me, otherwise it's pointless.

If only 50% of people wear them, it still reduces the airborne virus load and hence the risk of infection.

It's not a binary all or nothing thing, it's a degree of risk.

Anybody else pick up on the fact that:-
1. Those at the press conference congratulated South African scientists on finding and identifying the new variant quickly.
2. The variant is responsible for 90% of cases in a province (can't remember the name, Guateng?).

If both these facts are true, this suggests that the mutation spreads rapidly and probably explains why they are worried.
Gauteng. It is home both to Johannesburg and to Pretoria.
I was watching an interview with a South African professor earlier and he was saying that it does appear to be spreading faster, especially among younger people (e.g. only 23% of males aged 18-34 are vaccinated), but that it’s still too early to determine whether it is much more dangerous. Many in Gauteng are unvaccinated or only partially vaccinated, and because Delta had swept through already and the region was starting from a low base, Omicron is not competing with that. Only time will tell.

if the 1 person who doesn't wear it is the one infected and they emit it near you, you're still going to catch it especially if it's this infectious.

Either you go totalitarian or it's pointless. And with totalitarian you're in more danger from the pissed off folk willing to harm you for their freedom than you are from the virus.

Where as this 80% less likely to pass Covid come been reported?

If that’s the case why isn’t the government banging the drum about this?
it was published in the journal Nature I think? a couple of months back. I will try and find the article and share link.

I'm not entirely sure that vaccines do that. I'm double vaccinated and caught it. People I live with haven't been vaccinated and never caught it. It just all seems weird. If people wanna get vaccinated great, if they don't then that's their right.

Its their right to take up a bed needlessly and to spread the virus? Great rights! you must be very proud to hold such virtuous morals.
