so if this is an immuno-evasive variant to some degree, but much less severe, does this set our immune system up better going forward if it can handle something a bit more evasive but still learns to deal with it?

Thus the immune system can start to do a much better job of handling things by itself?

What about the next variant that isn't evolutionary descended from omicron and able to escape that natural immunity?

There are poorly contained covid reservoirs all around the world....

Just so. Gather in large crowds among fellow like thinkers - especially those who exhibit symptoms of COVID - and for God sakes don't wear masks. Hell, kiss everyone around you. I'm sure your immune system will take care of things.

Or... maybe just for fun... why not follow the advice of experts?... you know, the people trained in epidemiology and who have dedicated their lives toward the best possible understanding of disease?

Who are among the most intelligent people on earth - having competed academically to attend college - and then to excel intellectually to go on to graduate school - all the while becoming smarter and more learned about the causes of disease and the best possible remedial actions.

Nah! Belief in those "smart" folks is wrong! Gonna go with Internet "research" and speculation.

If Omicron is less severe than the Delta variant then the current rules are just ridiculous.
If a person lives with someone who's had a positive test then they have the following options.

Delta - no isolation needed but daily testing

Omicron - isolate for ten days regardless

So you can get on with your life from the deadlier variant but Omicron you have to live like a hermit again.
No not right.
I think a major increase in infectivity, N (the doubling time in days) would have to be counterbalanced by a power to the X decrease in severity for numbers to stay static, where X is a function of Delta and Omicron doubling times - the faster the doubling time the higher X has to be.

only quoted the scientists themselves this week. Not my fault they contradict each other but still expect everyone to follow blindly without question.

I'm double jabbed so I'd be better off anyway. I'm just not going to jump blindly into line for boosters when they've gone back on their word once already.

Maybe so. If Omicron is so infectious though then it'll eliminate competition and there's a zero sum game there for future variants to be even more infectious and what they have to trade-off.

He’s smarter than all scientists combined.

58,194 cases - highest since January

120 all settings deaths - down from 143 last week

England only 90 down from 115 last week

The Northern Ireland cases were down a bit today but weekly total flat at just over 12,100. Out of them today the over 80s are just 84 and the over 60s just 729 versus 4879 under 20 and 8249 under 40.

Percentage wise 6% over 60 and 68% under 40.

THIS is why cases are high but hospital numbers and deaths are not tracking with them. If Omicron is less severe that is even better news. But this trend is occurring under Delta so even if it is no worse than now the boosters are clearly doing the job intended.

Why are the media not posting these numbers and saying this instead of chasing gloom and doom all the time?
Because doom, gloom and fear are good for sales and clicks.

I'd like to refer you to the front page of the Guardian and the Daily Mail, every day since March 2020.

It’s only going to go one way with this new Variant what we should be watching is hospital admissions.
Presumably it will be difficult to distinguish admissions brought on by Delta and admissions brought on by Omicron. From the South African experience, to date, it does seem to lead to infants presenting at hospital, albeit perhaps not for long stays, so if that does happen, then hopefully the media won’t be hysterical in its reporting.

I know, naive. :-(

Went to the Winterwonderland event at the GMEX on Sunday 5 people I went with have tested positive this week one with new variant. Super spreader event.

Had 2nd jab July and had Covid in October

Would you get the booster now or hold off to say Feb considering I only had Covid in Oct and should have some sort of immunity?

Been lively on here I see.

Lots of very confident statements on the (lack of) severity of omicron.

Lots of people insulting experts.

Mixed views on whether some degree of restrictions is appropriate.

I felt myself getting sucked in to a state of frustration before, partly with posters and partly because of the damn virus. I'll make just a couple of posts, so apologies if I don't stay on for lots of debate.

If anyone starts to get their knickers in a twist over this covid shit, best thing to do is ignore everything you hear about it.

Turn the news off, trust me life is so much better.

It's here to stay and there's nothing we can do about it, so let's stop treating it like its the bubonic plague.

If it’s as transmissible as they say, every pub, restaurant, and football stadium concourse will be a veritable Petri dish this weekend. It’s summer in South Africa and spread easily there, so it should thrive in a British winter.

Good advice re news channels. But can I insist that you wear a black triangle on your stripey pyjamas.
