5018 cases in Scotland today (it was 2432 last week and 3196 yesterday). They do say the labs have been asked to speed up returns as they fight to keep tabs on Omicron so today is up a bit partly because of that. But positivity rose from 7.6% last week to 9.3% today so more tests is not the whole story.

Patients are still falling in Scotland despite these high cases though. 573 today v 652 last week. Fewer on ventilators than last Friday too. 40 v 46.

Scotland is thought to have quite a lot of Omicron.

A Cobra meeting is underway this afternoon on all this.

My mate who lives around Astley caught covid again last weekend boozing around town and he has just had a further NHS text notification saying that he may have the Omicron variant with a list of instructions what to do. He's 40 and in good shape, first time round when he got covid last October he had an ambulance called out for him and said it was the worse thing he had experienced, this time round he says it's just like a mild cold (he's double vaxxed no booster yet)
What do you know, the jabs work!

Jimmy Krankie already changing the rules. ANY close contact of a positive case now has to isolate for 10 days, regardless of testing negative or being vaccinated. Seems like all those people saying what’s the point of being vaccinated (especially the under 50’s) might have had a point, which can’t be the message to be pushing surely?

She is about to put us into lockdown and is only awaiting the funding from central government to do so.

The Northern Ireland cases were down a bit today but weekly total flat at just over 12,100. Out of them today the over 80s are just 84 and the over 60s just 729 versus 4879 under 20 and 8249 under 40.

Percentage wise 6% over 60 and 68% under 40.

THIS is why cases are high but hospital numbers and deaths are not tracking with them. If Omicron is less severe that is even better news. But this trend is occurring under Delta so even if it is no worse than now the boosters are clearly doing the job intended.

Why are the media not posting these numbers and saying this instead of chasing gloom and doom all the time?

You can still spread it to others even if you don't have symptoms. The tests aren't great either. My brother had COVID and 4 of his 5 LFT's were negative even after testing positive on the PCR.

It comes down to whether we're bothered about protecting the vulnerable or not. If we are, then it makes sense to isolate if someone in your house has covid. If we're not, then everyone should crack on.
But just because you live with someone that tests positive doesn't automatically mean another person in the household will catch it. It's stupid.
Should be daily testing for Omicron the same as Delta.

OK picture looking clearer - twice as infectious (minimum) with a doubling time of around 3 days in the UK (as opposed to 11 with Delta)
Now this doubling time may be due to a number of super-spreader events so it could be a lot lower.
Covid passports are a waste of time. One person infects over half the attendees (Norway party, Steps concert etc.)

At least a 1/3 as severe (worst case could be a lot better as initial hospitalisations in SA look like they were immune compromised) in terms of hospitalisation and 1/9 as severe in terms of ICU and deaths - very little lower respitory tract infections.

That looks like good news?

Though someone will be along shortly to show a screenshot of someone on Twitter saying we’re all going to die before Christmas.
Neil Fergusson who says we will be swamped if
Omicron is as severe as Delta. Guess what Neil? It isn't.

And mutations continue.

Omicron has numerous mutations to the spike protean- the part of the genome largely responsible for infection. Who knows what the next mutation to Omicron - the most prevalent strain and thus most likely to mutate - will bring?

He actually says a lot more than that and admits that things may be more positive.

None of us can tell yet quite how severe it will be in the U.K., but Sturgeon has obviously been briefed that it’s closer to doubling every 2 days, so people won’t have long to wait to find out.

The trend will be much more likely to be as infectious (you can't get much higher) and less severe.
