Coronavirus (2021) thread

I know it’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but if the football goes back to being behind closed doors I will be absolutely gutted. Concerned that it looks inevitable that this will indeed happen.

Football is my escape from the world in which I struggle daily from my extreme anxiety and other mental health problems. It’s like a comfort blanket and without fans it’s just not the same.

Pathetic I know but it’s the truth
It's not pathetic and I feel the similarly. I am anxious that the City v Leicester game on Boxing Day goes ahead. We all need something to look forward to.

I can see them shutting all communal events down IF the event will contribute to serious illness that might overwhelm hospitals. I think scientists are waiting to find out what the likelihood of this is. We know the transmissibility now but we don't know how many are likely to be hospitalised.

He also doesn’t need their permission to have an opinion and to offer it on here.

You have yours, he has his and you don’t agree and never will.
He goes around telling anyone who will listen ( and many on here do) that the scientists are wrong even though he is not remotely qualified to say so. We are not talking about dropping Grealish here, this is people's lives.

Also on many aspects of the pandemic i actually agree with him and he puts over many good arguments but when he flat out lays into the experts i will pull him up on it.

Very best wishes and hope it works out.

My 16yo absolutely loves the footie and getting back with him has been one of the highlights of the end of restrictions. I hated crowd free coverage.

I've zero idea how likely this is to hit footie, either through crowd restrictions or player infections.

I don’t read his posts like that.

He offers his opinion on the forecasts they make based on his profession.

Id say he is more than qualified to do just that.

He isn't. He has no expertise in Virology or Epidemiology. None. The difference is is that i don't tell the experts they are wrong and try to convince other on social media. How is this controversial?

Bit dramatic mate, posting his view to a handful of people who can be arsed reading this thread is hardly going to impact anyones life. The scientists that you swear by are all offering different opinions so they can’t all be right.

The overwhelming majority of scientists agree with each other. Misinformation costs lives.

I'm at high risk of this but i do not want others to go into lockdown forever etc because i know what it does to your head and some sense of normalcy has to be maintained. bur a few weeks of some restrictions is not uncalled for until we know more about this variant . again how is this controversial?

He is a statistician and is commenting on their forecasts and models surrounding them.

The scientists will be using someone just like him to put their numbers out so of course he is able to comment.

You not liking what he says doesn’t come into it I’m afraid.

Statisticians do their job over millions of subjects and it makes them an expert in none.

Don't you get it?
I did this for a living for 20 years.
They can't even retrofit their models to actual historical data.

C'mon. You have no experience in epidemiological modelling, unless you're hiding it very well. Neither do I, or anyone else here.

There's no problem disagreeing with experts, but humility is due; they know more than we do. If you disagree with them all, you'd better have a good argument.

If you just badly assert "it's mild, they're wrong" without any source, argument or data, then you'll get a strong pushback.

Local Asda (Hurst Cross in Ashton, frequented by a lot of tossers) probably same staff wise but I’d say about 75% of customers don’t wear a mask. I said to a lad during lockdown it’s a disgrace why they weren’t enforcing mask wearing, he said there was nothing they could do. I said (verbatim) “ it would help if you lot fucking wore one”. I didn’t go in for a few months afteR
my nearest too mate, with the herberts from smallshaw lane and whiteacre rd frequenting its not that surprising tbh
