F1 Season 2021

Sad to see this potentially being decided in the stewards office. Sure as racing drivers neither Lewis or Max would want that.

Brilliant pass by Max on the last lap either way.

Didn't see the race, only followed the final couple of laps and the result. I've got huge respect for Hamilton, but I'm not really all that invested in F1, truth be told.
I don't really understand the technicality involving lapped cars here. Could somebody who genuinely has no axe to grind — somebody who is neither a Hamilton supporter nor a Verstappen supporter — give me a clear-eyed assessment of whether the FIA have clearly broken rules of practice that have been observed in the past?
Rule 48.8 states you cannot overtake under the safety car. Mercedes argue Verstappen did this. The normal punishment would mean a 5 second penalty, meaning Hamilton wins.

Rule 48.12 states that when the race director allows lapped cars to overtake the safety car, the safety car must stay out until at least the end of the following lap. This did not happen, it went in on lap 57 rather than 58. This meant there was a last lap shootout between Hamilton and Verstappen, which Verstappen won. Mercedes argue that this was a breach of the rules. Unlike the above, no driver did anything wrong, so the remedy is unclear although @blueinsa believes this would hand the race win to Hamilton

Yes about 2.5 secs behind only grey area is done bullshit about changing to a grid penalty next season

this is what i think will happen

the punishment will be carried over to next season because of the time limit and end of season title being given to max already. it would have to be a big punishment like disqualification from the first race to keep many fans happy
but i don't see Mercedes or Hamilton happy with that

Only in so much it takes it into the last lap and this the race ends under the safety car with Lewis in front.

Don't know what could be changed but the fact you can go from losing by over 10 seconds and being 4 cars behind(that need to be passed) to being allowed to pit, change tires, come out and pass the cars you hadn't during the race. Then put yourself in a position where you are basically 0.01 seconds behind all because the car in last place crashed is mental.

I'd love to hear Hamilton's view on this. I wonder if he really likes the idea of him winning the championship via a stewards decision. I have a feeling he wouldn't.

God how tedious. I can’t imagine Hamilton would want to win this in a courtroom. It’s like Mike Tyson going to court to claim the count against Buster Douglas was too slow. Just get on with it like men and have it out against next season.

Where money is involved the lawyers will the say sporting integrity aside, F1 will have brought it on themselves.

Counts are a real thing though, changing rules to say only 5 lapped cars should overtake us a whole new level of clusterfuck. If trey wanted a shoot out yet should have red flagged standing or rolling restart for 5 laps both on softs

one protest rejected ? the jumping ahead under the safety car by max

I guess that makes sense - if that had been judged to deserve a penalty, then there is no debate about who wins, and things would be simpler.

As it is... lawyers on one side, against no lawyers in the middle and none on the other side??
