Erling Haaland

It’s more about what other players will think for me. It’s good to have a wage structure. It helps foster team spirit
That’s for the club to worry about but I do get your point. Footballers deserve to be paid dependent on how they perform, just like any job. When one of them score, my immediate reaction isn’t what they earn each week.

Agreed but my understanding is that all our elite players are incentivised by bonuses as opposed to mega base wages. It’s not my money so won’t lose any sleep about the figures, but if the guy next to you is earning half a mill a week and you are, say, Kev you would have to wonder

Couldn’t tell you what DeBruyne, Sterling, Foden or Grealish are earning and haven’t the foggiest what we might offer to Haaland but does it really matter to us fans? There’s always talk about what players earn but providing the club can afford it, make it happen. I just want to see city employing top class players, playing top drawer football

Squad harmony matters to a lot of fans.

Having 1 player make a lot more money than 2nd place “could” disrupt it.

Also, like we see in other teams, when 1 player makes the most money the rest of the squad tends to coast a bit thinking they shouldn’t do as much work. Delicate balance for Pep in these cases.

We pay good wages but we hardly chuck stupid money at players who aren’t worth the money (see degea, Pogba, sancho, etc down the road)

Haaland will command big wages but it’s to be expected given his reputation in the game. The best players will always earn the best money.

He's got to prove he deserves that wage if he signs for City. He might look a £400k a week player at Dortmund but he has to prove it at City first before he gets payed that much

It all comes from their local media who are nothing but mouthpieces. Whatever the club wants will get published. And they will use the Haaland situation to pretend publicly they’re “contenders” to start looking strong again, with the help of Sport, Mundo Deportivo etc
Clickbait football websites in the UK, many of which seem to exist solely to market gambling, will then write it up and quote these stenographers as Gospel.
It then appears on news aggregators like NewsNow.
And the gullible who accept things at face value rather than deploying basic Critical Thinking suddenly all lose their shit.
Rinse and repeat

Unfortunately he doesn’t. That’s the kind of money he’ll be looking for and if we don’t stump up we won’t see him in sky blue.

He doesn’t have to prove anything before we potentially sign him, he’s already done it

It doesn’t matter what I think.
What matters is how the team reacts.

Of course he will demand big money, but will it be so big to annoy our players, I don’t know.

How many times will this get discussed lol This thread really is rinse and repeat
Grealish walked in the door as our second biggest earner
Strikers everywhere are the top wages. Unless our players are the dumbest in the land, they know and expect it. They also know the place of Haaland in football right now, they aren’t alienated. I posted awhile back a conversation on the official Youtube channel between KdB and Zinchenko about who would be winning the Ballon D’Or in five or ten years (don’t remember) and they immediately said Haaland and Mbappe. If Kane came in the door last summer, he would as well have been our top earner.
Most importantly, all our players in their positions are extremely well payed. There isn’t a single one that can complain about how much they make (or will be making in new contracts to be signed soon) compared to players of their position and profile. And they know this. Just like they know that the player whose expectation is to be scoring more goals than the rest will naturally be making more than the rest... like in every other club
I understand why some would wonder about this stuff but it really is a non-issue in the football world. Mbappe will arrive at Madrid as the highest earner by some margin (again, I have chosen carefully my words as Bale’s contract ends at the end of THIS season, in case some can’t comprehend like last time), does anyone really think there is a single Madrid fan discussing whether Vinicius Jr, Benzema or Hazard are okay with it? Lol We are a giant and our mentality needs to catch up with that reality eventually

Grealish makes less than Kevin, Sterling or Stones, of course that caused no problems.

Of course our squad is well paid, but Kevin at 400k is our highest, while someone like Frenkie de Jong at Barca makes like 700k.

I don't know what wage Haaland and his agent will want, but I am expecting something quite high or around FDJ wages.

And if there is no problem with the squad, then great. Maybe the club gives everybody a slightly higher wage as a gesture. Who knows. I want Haaland too, but I am not blind to the logistics of it all, I hope it can work out.

Grealish makes less than Kevin, the same as Sterling and more than Stones.

FdJ does NOT make 700k. He makes £354k. I kept hearing people here say FdJ would be unrealistic because of his wages, and now I understand, if that’s (700k) what some think he makes. Our highest wage is higher than Barcelona’s now and the same as Madrid’s (KdB = Hazard. I am once again choosing to ignore Bale because his contract ends this season, he’s not renewing it and it was signed in the older model that they don’t work under anymore)

Even still, Grealish tying 2nd has nothing to do with the discussion. He isn’t above our top earner or close to it. If he was earning more than KdB then we would hear way more about it.

FDJ wage may be wrong, but Haaland will definitely go over 354k.

Again, I want Haaland, but I’m still wondering about the logistics of it.

I think Grealish being the second highest earner certainly features into this discussion when people here make points like “he should prove himself first” or whatever. Mind you, I myself have no problem with Grealish making what he makes in relation to the squad as he is expected to be one of the protagonists in the coming years, which justifies his wages and precisely the reason why it will justify Haaland’s.
Of course Haaland’s wages will be higher than FdJ’s. Barcelona right now has no one to be making more than that. In fact, I have been wondering if Ferran has been promised significantly higher wages there and that’s one of the reasons why he wants to go.
Every time a club without a top striker signs one it’s the same “breaking wage structure” bullshit talk: https://www.sportbible.com/football...ir-wage-structure-romelu-lukaku-deal-20210813

The reason we paid Grealish that much is because Aston Villa is preparing and even bigger wage offer (higher than us) to persuade Grealish to stay, so City board need a little bit of push of wage offering closer to Villa offer but still within City Board valuation to convince him to join us.

But we don’t join “bidding wars”, I heard?
I kid, I kid...

That has never been, or will ever be the case. Here or anywhere else.

I've never understood this concept that players get upset at the ideas of other players earning more. Surely it is the opposite, it raises the ceiling and means they will eventually get paid more. Same as in any job, really.
