City & FFP | 2020/21 Accounts released | Revenues of £569.8m, £2.4m profit (p 2395)

I don’t think they realise yet the hole they are in. They are in a spiral of decline with an old-fashioned business model. They can get much worse. City fans know only too well what happens next. Happy days.
I always thought they’d devalued what they offer to sponsors by selling so many deals, Chinese noodle partner, Algerian plumbing supplies partner, and whatever. It’s stopped any association with glamour or glory for potential sponsors and means any company associated with them just seems slightly naff. Doesn’t help that they’re crap on the pitch either.

There's a new marketing angle there. Companies can celebrate the fact they're second rate by associating themselves with the world's biggest second-rate brand.

I've written the copy for them.

"Is your product in decline? Are your competitors laughing at you? Then associate your brand with one where second rate is second nature.

£500,000 a year gets our Bronze package, with regular plugs from Steven Howson.

£1m a year gets you the Silver package, with product placement in Mark Goldbridge's watch-along.

And for £2.5m you get our Gold package, where Phil Jones is the face of your brand!

Don't delay - contact Richard Arnold today!"

The downturn in United's commercial revenues is remarkable. I wonder where they'll be if things carry on like they have been for 5 years.
I think their shirt sponsor was a big give away.

Team Viewer is paying them significantly less than Chevrolet were.

They're not a 'cool' progressive brand that people want to be associated with.

£2.5m for the ‘face’ Jones is a bargain;)

‘Why be the best?
The United way, it’s in your DNA’

What do you mean by an old fashioned business model?
One based on borrowing huge amounts of money where the owner makes money for themselves by growing share price without investing properly back into the core business. Like Mike Ashley or the Glazers. The Glazers have made no attempt to expand their football business. They have milked their existing markets to the maximum and leveraged everything off the United brand. That is not a long-term sustainable model in the way that CFG is. They have not spent a penny in the Greater Manchester community. They will make their pile when they sell up. In many ways they are asset strippers, just a bigger version of the crook who destroyed Rochdale FC.

Passing United’s revenue is a huge achievement and certainly a tougher one to have done them on the pitch.

Whilst next year United will be back above, the reality is with debt payments we will still be in a better situation.

There is also a good chance the next year after that depending on the success of the 2 teams that we are above in what they would call a normal season.

City are now arguably the team in the England who benefit the most from FFP!! Cheers Gill

Were our wages not over a 13-month period, no?

Which would make a helluva a big difference to the claim we are paying the biggest wages?

There is also a bit of a convenient trope about our record revenue in comparison to United's, citing the fact the shit tip being empty for last season has distorted the gap to the tune of £100m?

I'd suggest the £40m (98% drop) we all suffered in loss of gate money means we would still probably be ahead next year when it is next factored?

Along with the player sales included of Torres £55m, Nmecha £11m, Harrison £12m, Angelino £18m and Sancho clause £14m - £110m.

If anything, the gap will be even greater, as United can't sell anyone of note.
Even worse if they done secure top 4

It will depend to a large degree on who gets further in this season's Champions League and where Utd finish as broadcasting monies for the Premier League and Champions League are very significant.

Wages will be 12 months as players are on monthly pay like anyone else, but it will include any performance related bonuses paid on games played after the covid break and at the end of the 19/20 season as the only “one-off” addition to a normal year. I doubt these were that big but genuinely no idea.

Id say the wages number is pretty representative and will stay around the same level next year.

On revenue, yes suspect we could still be ahead of united in next accounts but it will be much closer. Depends on CL performances and how far each team gets really.

Player sales profits dont hit revenue as its not a true reflection of what the club primary function is. They just go through as “other income”
I would also think 2 large loyalty bonuses were paid out, to Sergio and Fernandinho.

The Glazers have spent more than City on their playing squad. I don't understand your comparison to Mike Ashley. That's nonsense. Milking markets and leveraging your brand are exactly what all businesses do including City. You are trying to create a false commercial distinction between the Glazers and Sheikh Mansour. Where City have been successful is in the footballing infrastructure, the commercial success flows from that.

The Glazers have spent (badly) on the playing squad but allowed the rest of the club to rot. The infrastructure at United is in tatters off the field because the Glazers see the club purely as a personal vehicle to make money. The comparison with Ashley is that the Glazers are driven by the same motivation...personal greed. The Glazers have no long-term strategy or vision. They are dinosaurs compared to Sheikh Mansour in the way they operate.
