Covid and travel discussion

Fine to book on the day I think.
Trains did go through a fairly long period of only selling a certain amount of tickets for every journey (social distancing and whatnot) but that is a thing of the past now.
Obviously advance tickets will likely be cheaper than on the day but you can just rock up, buy and board now.
(I dread to think what the walk up price is for Manchester - London without a railcard....)

thanks, I thought that must be the case but looking online purchase options seemed very limited. I think it’s gonna set me back about £120 off peak return which is pretty insane really. Only buying on the day as there was uncertainty in the plans so couldn’t guarantee dates.

For the prices we have to pay (and annual increases without fail every damn year) you'd assume our trains and services were top class instead of the bag of shite they are.
Compared to Europe where travelling by train is often a pleasure and at a fraction of the costs in the UK.

If you can be arsed with the hassle you might be able to split the journey and save a few quid.

Better to go online and try and split your journey, e.g. Book Manchester Piccadilly to Crewe and then Crewe to London, you should make a decent saving.

Anyone been to Jordan?

It's a destination I've wanted to go to for years and although I'm not mad eager to do an escorted tour at my age (coming up 35 in a couple of months) I think it seems a good way to see the main sights for this particular country.
I also wanna do it whilst I'm still relatively young and fit and able bodied, as the general itineraries look quite intense.

Spotted a good deal for end of Feb next year without a solo supplement, probs gonna book it as land only through the tour op via work and then I'll sort my flights out independently later this year. Finishes at the Movenpick hotel and resort at the Dead Sea so will likely tag on an extra night or 2 there to chill out.

If anyone has any experience or pointers I'd be interested to hear them.

Tui uk expect summer 2022 bookings to be back to pre-pandemic levels..tunnel light end..

From a travel perspective it definitely does have an aura of a start to returning to pre-pandemic levels.
Coming out of winter, loads of the population vaccinated and boosted, the inbound rules being totally relaxed for fully jabbed travellers.

I think the threat of variants will hang over us forever more and just something we live with as a society, so that isn't really a concern as such.

Long haul travel to many destinations this year will remain problematic and in some cases impossible, but for those people who don't mind testing before travel then suddenly the world isn't so small; Caribbean, Dubai, America, Canada, Indian Ocean and Thailand are all (mostly) open and hopefully will stay that way.

Places like South East Asia, South America and Australia/New Zealand still have question marks hanging over them and realistically it could be 2023 before some of those are geared up to take tourists properly again without too many prohibitive measures.

If people just want an easy summer break somewhere in the Med this year, you won't go too far wrong with Spain, Greece, Croatia and Turkey. These countries will be desperate for us and I'd be amazed if there is anything more taxing than a form and proof of jab to get into them by this summer.

If you're unvaxxed by choice, then things will likely be difficult and I have zero sympathy.

yes, I went in 2011 about 2 months after the Syrian War started. I though I was going to be cancelled but the Syria stuff was very small scale then but the reason i mention it is because it meant that tourism was roughly 90% down that spring/summer

Amman is nice, good vibe and amazing food. Sadly all of the ancient Roman stuff up near the Syrian border i went to will be strictly off limits now and i suspect generally touring about will be more difficult due to the many many refugee camps now in the countryside, so take this into mind

Dead Sea great, also down to the Saudi border for snorkelling. And of course Petra, which remains one of the greatest places on Earth, if you're into that sort of thing. Again, i dont know what it's like to visit now, but it's very good indeed. Altogether i had a brilliant 2 weeks there.

Appreciate the reply, sounds like you had an amazing trip (at quite a unique time too with the conflict bubbling under).

The tour I've provisionally booked onto starts in Amman for a couple of nights, does Petra, Wadi Rum and finishes with a couple of nights at the Dead Sea (I'm probs gonna stay on a day or 2 longer at the end).

Something I've wanted to do for years and never got round to booking it so I was very pleased when I saw the deal departing end of Feb 2023 as knew I could do it then, great to have it finally pencilled in.

Hi!

Can someone answer a question about claiming travel insurance? We're trying to claim the cost of flights back because my wife got Covid and the whole family had to self-isolate.

We had travel insurance with the post office. The form asks for confirmation from a "Medical Practitioner", but of course we just have the confirmation of the test and the gov SMS/Emails to self isolate.

The guidance is really unclear. Does anyone know what we need to submit to claim? It'd be a bit of nonsense to have to ask our GP to confirm an infection, given she wasn't personally involved...

Any advice?

Was it lateral flow or PCR that she tested positive on?

It should be a relatively straightforward claim but you know what insurance can be like and their policy wording could be ambiguous.
Certainly the website claims it covers cancellation within 14 days of departure due to a positive test....

Yes, a PCR test, and we can get chickens of that. The confusion is because the claim form clearly predates covid - so if you say there was a medical reason for cancelling they ask you for confirmation from a "medical practitioner".

The post office will try their very best not to pay out . Previously having given up on a claim myself. They even asked me to contact the administrator at flybe for confirmation they had gone bust. It was all over the news at the time .

Probably worth trying to speak to someone (if you haven't already) and see if there is an updated claim form or different process/s to follow.
They likely won't make it easy for you, such is their nature, but definitely worth pursuing because it should be an open and shut case when it eventually gets sorted.

Good luck!
