Never heard of the guy obviously (as indeed 99% of people here unless they play FIFA on XBOX 24 hours a day)..... However if we sign him for £20m I look forward to him being considered 'world class' in 3 years and being another example where every fan says 'City have world class players everywhere it is easy they are playing in cheat mode'' as opposed to 'City seem to sign players with limited opposition from other clubs and then they turn out to be brilliant because they have an overall strategy unlike the team I support'

As I haven't seen even a video clip of him play, can you summarize the weaknesses in his game . I am sure I am not the only City fan in this position. Whereas you can watch him every week.

It’s not that I don’t think much of him… I think he’s very good in the South American context, but even here I have seen him disappear from games a lot. He also works in a very specific system, having worked with only one manager in his senior career, and that raises questions. The PL in particular is now a very physical league and I have questions about how he will fare. His finishing is okay.
 
I dont know anything about him but have seen quite a few people comparing him to Mertens at Napoli, which would be interesting if true, could see how a player like that might slot into our current style of play.

The Premier league had always been very physical.
A bit more specific then.

Two footedness;
Heading abiliity;
First touch;
Workrate;
Movement ;
Passing;
Speed;
Aggression. ???

you really don't have to have followed world football *that* much to have heard of this lad in the last year

Moreno’s the one I was thinking of. I know he looked very promising on his video highlights. Definitely wasn’t signed to go straight into the first team like Jesus; I remember he got a pretty nasty injury not long into his loan with Deportivo, so that might have slowed his development. Like others are saying, always a gamble but not much harm done at £17m if it doesn’t work, other than the opportunity cost of developing another player.

It's worth looking at Moreno's record before signing for us though. Just in terms of games played, he managed 9, 17 and 1 league games in the three seasons before we bought him, and 43 games in total, so he was quite obviously still a youngster breaking through. That's different to Alvarez, who played 45 games scoring 22 goals in a stronger league last year. While young, he's an established member of the first team. Far more similar to Jesus.

Moreno was widely touted as the best player in the Copa Libertadores that season at 18/19 so it's not really surprising. That just happens with South American players a lot. They go from poverty most of us can't imagine, missing out on their teenage years because they focused on football to being set up for life and get the freedom of moving away from home all in one go.

Yep that's fair, and Vickery also said that he didn't think he should be leaving in 2016 and would probably benefit for another season over there.

He plays in the Argentinian league my friend. I can name a grand total of zero players that play in the Argentinian league. Which is about as many as I am interested in. Hearing his name banded about in gossip is one thing. Having a genuine informed opinion that isn’t based on what a journalist stated, Wikipedia or that you got from some basic YouTube highlights is another thing entirely
 
Arriving in June: if River don't make the L16 of the Copa.
Arriving in Jan: (post WC) if they do.

If how I see it.

If Jesus is sold or an offer arrives in summer, they take it and bring him over in June.

Summer 23 is in the article with no reasoning.
 
The actual deal is the following Manchester City have bought Julian alvarez for US $ 24.25 million but he stays at River until the season ends unless we lose in the eight finals of the Libertadores in July. If River make the quarter finals He will stay in Argentina unless City pay an extra US $ 1.7 million.The City group have offered 50% of Valentin Castellanos to River for US $ 7.5 million at the same time.As regards South American players and poverty I can tell you that Alvarez is from a middle class family and is highly educated.One final thing is that River Plate is the only club in the World with its own University as well as second level education and many of the youth players avail of this

We're signing him to secure his signature now. City know they don't have space in their squad to add an attacker as it stands. We're waiting until a space opens up and then drafting Alvarez in.
