Neil Young demands Spotify remove his music.

I've heard his age referenced before by non fans of his music, whats wrong with being 75, why do you have to mention his age ? Do you think he's irrelevant because he's 75 ?
I'm surprised you dont support a world famous artist who is speaking out in support of Nurses and Doctors and trying to save lives.
Even the WHO support him in this.

By that measure Springsteen has less than 3 years to try and be relevant............Dolly Parton has had no relevance for a year and nobody at all even considers anything Paul McCartney says or does is relevant and hasn't been for 4 years - the wisdom of youth eh?

Speaking of the who (yes I realise you didn’t mean them) I assume young hasn’t had any issues sharing a platform with convicted sex offenders for the last few years?

Hahaha you really must try much harder in your Neil young hatred.

Sex offenders don't help prolong the pandemic and kill people.
Nearly every person who dies here in Australia ATM in not vaccinated.
Also no platform actively promotes sex offending.

Why, did they have a podcast in which they went around telling other people to have sex with kids? I must have missed that.

The trouble is, to be able to decide if Neil Young is right or wrong with his stance, I have to go listen to a man I’ve never listened to before, on podcasts which I don’t normally bother with. It feels wrong just to take other peoples’ words on this matter because that’s the root of misinformation. Then again, I’d probably just sit there listening and think the guy’s a knobhead, or I’d fall asleep. (I am vaguely aware of the guy and have a pre-informed opinion but don’t know what he has said specifically in his Spotify-hosted podcasts).

I do think that the general low opinion among artists of Spotify is feeding this. It might be a cynical view, but the comparatively low fees they pay out for music versus what Rogan got paid up front can’t be helpful. It’ll be interesting to see if younger artists withdraw their music, they’ve more to lose. If Spotify was viewed as a more positive force for the industry I think Neil Young would probably be taking a different tack.

Meanwhile I just want to stream music, find new artists and perhaps buy their merchandise, go to gigs etc. I don’t want it politicised.

But here we are.

I don't see anything political about this mate.
It's about being vaccinated during a pandemic to protect hospitals and save lives.
It’s power politics to me and I agree with criticising those who push false info. I like his music and think this other guy is a tosser (but only based on what I’ve heard, I’m apolitical generally).

And there we have it, the real reason. Rogan was the tipping point.

Let’s see if he pulls his music from Amazon, after all, there’s loads of Joe Rogan stuff on there, books, podcasts.
YouTube is probably where Rogan has most reach. Interesting what young says about Spotify sound quality though. They were meant to have brought out a 'hifi'/lossless format by the end of last year but kept kicking the can down the Rd.

LoL you guys
There always has to be a conspiracy theory of sorts.
Pathetic.
Well IF he’s a man of his word, he’ll pull his music from Amazon because their platform hosts a weekly roundup of the same Spotify podcast, has links directly back to the daily shows on Spotify, links to Rogan’s website, his instagram and his sponsors, which seems to be an online psychiatrist/counselling service and loads more sources.

I’m not one of them guys by the way. Just wondering where Neil’s going with this.

I just hope he hasn’t noticed the Steve Bannon podcast on Apple.

Slightly off topic but it’s fine for me and probably most users I would say. Not everyone can hear the difference (I can’t) just as some can’t see the difference between SD and HD tv pictures (I can). Also even if you can hear the difference, many don’t want the cost of the better speakers.

Yeah, I agree, because he promised explicitly that he'd walk away from Amazon if they sold Rogan coffee mugs or had links to some words he wrote or said once. Oh, wait, no, he didn't do that. But he did say he'd boycott Apple if they hosted a Steve Bannon podcast. Oh, sorry. He didn't say that either.

Gee, I wonder what makes a guy a "man of his word"? If only we could find a recent example.

Ahhh, I know. How about this?

"Yo, Spotify. Either Joe goes or I go."

"Joe's staying, Neil."

"OK. See ya."

I'm kind of thinking Neil made a strategic error by not scrawling his letter to fans in crayon so that those confused by this incredibly complicated set of circumstances could grasp what happened a bit better.

So explain to me, without acting like the way you just did, what the difference is between sharing a platform with Rogan’s podcast on Spotify “because it spreads misinformation” and sharing a platform with Rogan’s weekly ‘roundup’ podcast - ie same misinformation, potentially - on Amazon?

Yep. Spotify have kind of got away with that. I was going to try one of those other streaming sites to see if I could spot the difference - give it a 3 month trial. I have a decent hi-fi set up so I should hear the difference, but I can't cancel Spotify now as they'd think I was a fan of Neil Young's music, and I can't have that!

I don't know, and I don't care, and it doesn't matter in the least to me. When Neil Young specifically says he is or is not boycotting Amazon or Apple (or Ivory Soap or the entire fucking internet because Rogan uses them too) then we can look into whether or not the thinly-disguised "he's a hypocrite" or "he's lying about why he's leaving" accusations have merit.

It's his choice to leave for whatever reasons he wants or says he wants, as it is Spotify's to keep Rogan.

If you need an answer right away for some reason, I'd suggest that Spotify paying Rogan $100 million for an exclusive distribution agreement and Amazon not doing that has something to do with it, but I could be wrong.
