Basically Ukraine gets loads of money for having the pipeline run through their country. They used to get gas from Russia at mates rates, when Ukraine decided they’ve got a new best friend in Europe, Russia put the gas price up in Ukraine, which they didn’t like and refused so Russia ended up turning the pipe off on New Year’s Day, just read it was 2009 but thought it was later than that.Is it the pipeline from Russia to Germany called something2?
Why would Putin risk losing that by invading Ukraine? I cant help feeling that we are being fed BS just like wmd's in Iraq. Are you suggesting that the western alliance would prefer Germany to buy its gas from elsewhere ie uk, us, uae, or to put it mildly anyone but Russia. Nord stream 2 means gas goes directly to Germany under the Baltic Sea, Ukraine don’t want this, and neither do Poland, as they both want the transit money.
The joke of cancelling Nord stream 2 is if Russia invade Ukraine, they don’t need nord stream 2 as they’ll have the Ukrainian pipeline. That said, that doesn’t increase the amount of gas they can deliver in the short term. But what Russia can’t deliver in pipes they turn into LNG and ship anyway, however it’s more expensive.
Europe doesn’t want the resilience on Russian gas, because if they have an argument the Russians then hold the cards, but Europe haven’t spent the money on renewables that they should have, because they’re stupid. So now Europe are all a bit fucked. Except maybe France as they use nuclear for electricity, most power plants use gas you see, so a high gas price equals a high electricity price too.
Ukraine want to join NATO after their falling out, Russia won’t have it and will invade Ukraine before that happens and have already annexed Crimea in 2014.
The west have their hands tied as they need Russian resources. So even if they want to get involved, it’ll only be by proxy.

Apologies if it’s been covered already, but if the shit hits the fan, where does that leave abramovic ? Isn’t he quite pally with putin? I read the other day that as part of sanctions oligarchs could have their assets frozen/seized.

Fair comment, everyone makes their own decisions. Others may see my position as a cop out and I understand that but I compartmentalise sport and politics. Many countries invade other countries or facilitate such invasions by providing arms or logistical assistance and countless deaths result from political decisions. If I were to “boycott” any country which I thought had acted immorally I wouldn’t have been to China or Russia or USA or India or Zimbabwe etc etc.
I understand your optics, but you also didn't visit those particular countries to watch football?
Football is an irrelevance in the midst of war, certainly visiting a country that is the aggressor at the time?

Russia is on the verge of another Iron Curtain, one which will see a Champions League Final there cease to exist.

Russia are emboldened enough these days to be able to send their warships within 14 miles of Glasgow in plain view.

He's got most of his money in Israel these days.
He lost £1.5bn though last week because of his stake in Evraz Steel and the threat of sanctions on that company.
Chelsea is an asset though and the government could freeze his investments here.
