Russian invasion of Ukraine

Russias central bank has raised their interest rate to 20%, good luck paying your mortgage in Moscow
It’s the innocent that get hit though most Russians don’t want this war,Putin doesn’t give a fuck he’s a billionaire with money siphoned off in many countries feel sorry for the Russian civilians who have now had there lives fucked by a madman

China is a far bigger worry militarily than Russia.

they have the same state control mechanisms, but with probably less corruption.

their economy provides the world with goods, and has done for years. This has earnt them fortunes which they’ve re-invested, particularly in Africa and Asia.

their military has also been remarkable at copying other countries high technology, in the past few years this has been moved onto producing their own state of the art weapons. The quantity of naval shipbuilding in the past decade is incredible (look at wiki and the dates of when ships built).

… and of course they are nuclear.

they currently don’t have the same ability as the US to project force worldwide, but in Asia they are flexing, and with the speed their navy is growing - their carrier ability has gone from zero to 2nd largest in world in a decade - it won’t be long before they have some equivalences to the US fleets.
Their military technology still lags behind the US but I agree they are catching up rapidly. Worryingly they have also secured large reserves of minerals and metals across Africa and South America.

What you have to remember is that Putin hasn't used his most deadly weapons and missiles on Ukraine and Kiev yet. He knows if he did that there would be a huge loss of innocence lives, much more than there has already been. Putin could obliterate Kiev over night without sending his troops in first. If this was a war against NATO you would see much more powerful weapons and missiles in use. Putin wants to try keep Kiev intact or at least limit the destruction of Kiev. Kiev being destroyed, along with a puppet Russian ruler in charge of what's left of Kiev, with 10,000's of Men, 'Women and Children' dead, is not what Putin wants.

Saying that, Putin and his Generals have underestimated the resolve and the determination of the Ukrainian people to fight for their country. With arms (and new fighters) now flowing to the Ukrainian fighters from all around World, this war could be be a long and painful one for Putin, his army, the Russian people, and Russia.

Economically Russia will eventually be degraded. In time Putin will struggle to fund any long war with Ukraine, and the devasted Russian economy will begin to hurt the Russian people, who will find the cost of living going through the roof, as the Ruble, etc collapses.

The Ruble is collapsing.

Surely an independent nation should be able to decide its own future mate, it’s not the Ukrainians fault they happen to be next door neighbours to Russia.

Russia is big enough as is and literally no one wants to invade them or have a war. Putin should be trying to make his own country better as it is.
Is the sane answer.

Russia has a lot of Thermobaric weapons that we have not seen yet, I'd be very concerned if he starts using them

These are devastating and could probably level Kiev.

Not a fan of Trump or Johnson, especially the former but when have either done anything remotely like Putin has in the last week?

This is some fucking take.

Trump to an extent had a go at taking over his own country.

You are right though, can't lose sight of the fact he invaded a sovereign country, is threatening others, and hinting at the world that he would use nukes against anyone.

I'm not up for a debate about this (I'm not knowledgeable enough) but I think if this resolves peacefully Britain should re-join the EU and take a leading role in massively building up EU military conventional defenses.

I didnt have a vote but I tended towards Brexit. I've completely changed my mind after this.
Bear in mind that EU turned down the most effective weapon at first. Even now, the exclusion from Swift is partial. US and ourselves wanted full exclusion but compromised to get EU onside.
The announcement of a complete change of policy brought gasps in German parliament and there is some opposition to it. Hold your fire until it all pans out.
