Russian invasion of Ukraine

The west needs to find a way to take off the snakes head. It will give everyone a way out.

Putins war not Russia’s war. Even if this is not entirely true. Propaganda works both ways.
Suppose, at his age, Putin just doesn't care whether or not the world is sent into a nuclear winter?
He won't foreshorten his life by much anyway.
Suppose that he has given instructions to his generals that, in the event of his untimely death, 'button B' will be activated?
Would his Generals commit an act of sedition to save themselves, their families and the rest of humanity?
This is the problem.

I would, actually.

I think being a citizen of a country should come with it the expectation of fighting for your country. As a foreign student on a foreign student visa, I think it is ridiculous to expect one to take up arms in defence of the country.

How is a foreign student visa and different than a visitor visa? I’ll tell you…it’s good only for the time you are enrolled in Uni, THEN it becomes a 90 day visitor visa.

Would you expect to be given a uniform and a gun and sent to the front lines while on your hols at Walt Disney World?
I think I'll stick to going to Disneyland Paris if that's the case.

i'm not. But millions (billions?) of chinese, russians and maybe indians either will or have no choice if currency reserves are phased out in favour of centrliased crypto. you're every day russian at the moment only owns roubles with a back up of dollars, which is old school Cold War methods. the world is changing.

And they will still hedge their bets with dollars and/or gold. The world may be changing, but gold has been a safe harbour for centuries and the only global currency is dollars.

That said, I’m old school myself and struggle with crypto currencies and banana/hedgehog/whatever NFT’s :)

Why do you think we have not really touched the oligarch's wealth yet? Why have we given them an 18-month window to get the hell out of dodge with their dirty Russian money?

Boris Johnson is saying we are leading the way in sanctions (world-beating anyone?) and basking in the applause of the client journalists when in fact it is our European partners who are seizing assets.

Because, when this is over, everyone with money will note we gave an 18 month window to get out of town which means it’s safe to park your money in London in the future.

Just dont see how he can back out now and retain power, which is all that matters to him.

This is going towards either a bigger war or him being removed internally and I'm not confident that will happen. Whilst he has China on side, or at least not against him he'll be secure.
China will probably, reluctantly, be forced into making a choice.
I hope they make the right one...

I wonder how the Americans would feel if in an alternate World the Russians had been slowly admitting the South and Central American countries into the Warsaw pact and were now trying to add Mexico as the final piece in the jigsaw.
Think similar situation to what you laid out with Cuba in 60s?

If the claims from Ukraine are true that they were tipped off by Russia's own internal security services about a planned assassination attempt by Chechen special forces sent by Putin to kill Zelensky, then there is hope to be had.

It would suggest there are still powerful people in Russia who don't agree with this invasion and have considerable power and resources to turn the screw on Putin?

That’s why Ukraine holding out isn’t futile. Russia can’t keep this up.

Correct, they just need to keep fighting because Russia will bleed out cash and supply lines before much longer.

With each passing day Ukraine is closer to perhaps bringing an end to Putin and releasing Russia from his grip.
