Russian invasion of Ukraine

On the news now. The UK will impose further sanctions soon. WTAF, get them done now, fuck the due diligence shit, worry about that afterwards.

I swear, we could have nucs en route and the Government would dilly dally about approving a response.
Working out how they can avoid inheritance tax in the event of a nuclear Armageddon!!

Your outgoings drop dramatically once out of the office environment...travel costs, lunches, clothes etc.

There's also the get up when you want....it's icy/blowing a gale/pissing down......no worries I'll have another brew and stay inside.

I've been out I think about 8 years now on the same sort of terms you've likely been offered, feels like 2 years rather than 8.

I still wake up at 5.30/6.00am but now don't have to put up with all the shit that goes with the CS.
I'm looking forward to it, IF it's agreed.
Being honest here though, I'd been thinking about it a lot since I got my 40 years in (May 2021), and this whole shit now just made me do it.
Thanks for your reply, but I don't think I should derail the thread so I'll leave it there. Thank you though.

Can’t see the yanks getting involved especially as Biden can’t remember what he did 15 minutes ago.

What a naïve, poor comment that adds nothing constructive to the discussion. Why bother if you can't post anything sensible?

Why would they, or anybody else for that matter, get involved in a direct war with Russia if it can be avoided?

I believe from what I heard before the reason for the delay is to ensure there are no "legal ramifications" that might ensue. Sounds like they want to ensure there's no legal loopholes that can be exploited.

Might be total BS, but that's what I remember hearing.

Why haven’t the Ukraine armed themselves properly over the last 8 years whilst the clashes in the east have been going on. You would think they would have bought more weaponry than they seem to have.

They were saying that about the legal side of things slowing things down however QC's on twitter are saying it's complete bullshit. Germany is seizing land, housing, bank accounts, yachts etc.

Britain could do the same however the current Government is taking it's time. Those donations from Russian oligarchs and those linked to Putin were paid for such eventualities.

Really is corruption and moral bankrupcy in plain sight.

And last night a German guy said they need to go back to coal and open up more pits and nuclear power, farewell clean air tax lol. If that’s the case we have 400 years of coal under us let’s do the same until clean energy is widely available, yes I know it will rake years to get up and running it thus has shown how easy it is for us to be cut off.
Could be the kick up the arse the West needs to break all ties with Russia and become self-sufficient. If it means us all going two years with no heating or hot tap water then I’d be prepared to put up with that.

Money probably. The West needs to start arming all the other satellite states before the tanks start rolling in there as well.

So your ok with innocent people being blown to bits you arse.

That’s literally exactly what they’ve been doing.

Why do you think we’re 8 days in with no Russian tactical victories as opposed to it being a 6 hour war in 2014?

Trump was impeached for blocking a $400m Javelin missile arms deal.

We’ve been shopping them NLAWs for months.

They bought all those Turkish drones in the last couple of years and have 20 more on order.

Spot on!

Putin simply harkens back to a 1970's Soviet Union where Russia played a dominant role on world politics.

His plan to rekindle the Soviet Union past is to expand Russia's borders by invading its neighbors. First Georgia. Next Crimea. Now the Ukraine proper.

He counts, rightly, among his supporters, those on the west who idiotically believe whatever excuse is proposed for Russia's latest aggression. Thankfully the west seems to have awoken.

Russia is the analogue to Nazi Germany circa 1930-1940. And the West has finally realized this (mostly - I'm looking at you few idiots who believe otherwise, beholden to Putin's propaganda).
I don't think he's thought it, through.

Firstly, Russia doesn't have the money. A population of 145 million with a GDP of about 1.7 trillion. Compare that to Italy with a population of 60 million and a GDP of 2.1 trillion. Most of the countries Putin has his eye on are economically stronger (relatively) than Russia are now.

Secondly he doesn't have the manpower to maintain an empire. If you look at the Russian population demographics, there is a huge hole where men of fighting age should be: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Russia

Thirdly, the USSR came out of the ashes of WWII and the spectre of Nazism meant a lot of people were willing to accept communism as a necessary evil in the early years. The alternative now is liberal democracy, which is infinitely more appealing.

Fourth, he doesn't understand that the USSR collapsed because it was bankrupted by the West, in particular Reagan, due in large part to the enormous expense of the Russian Afghanistan campaign. It'll be history repeating itself with the Ukraine.

I think Russia will end up like Iran, a pariah state. Some countries will trade with them; China & India because they can, North Korea because they don't care, but their economic development will fall further and further behind and their influece on the world stage will wane until Putin dies and a more moderate leadership takes over.
