Melbourne City FC Thread

Well that was an impressive/surprising second-half display, with Curtis Good certainly living up to his surname. Don’t think I’ve ever seen Melbourne City play so directly from back to front, most unusual, but worthy winners.
Good day with WU dropping points.

One for Heartman I think but the game v Wellington in Sydney seemed to have no crowd, are Covid restrictions still on?

I’m not sure if it’s due to COVID-19 restrictions or whether it’s down to Wellington being unable to find a match sponsor for the game. That was certainly the reason why the game against Victory in February was played behind closed doors, so hopefully @heartman can enlighten us.

Both are correct.

Nix cannot play home games in NZ as restrictions are still n place. They have been based in Wollongong and have struggled to muster much support financially and it actually costs them to play home games.

As a cost cutting measure they have closed the ground. They have also looked at playing the rest of their home games vs NSW teams as the home team. Not sure this will be allowed, but they deserve a huge amount of credit.

They have been living on the road for 2 seasons and for the most of it been pretty competitive.

The restrictions for outdoor stadia here in NZ have just been lifted so in theory the Phoenix could play home games again but there is the the logistics and planning to make it happen. Things won't get normal for quite a while yet
Really unbelievable sacrifice from Wellington. Not sure they will ever get the recognition they deserve.

Game tonight at home vs Sydney FC.

Why do people not go to matches in midweek? Would it be the same for other sports, too?
Kind off.

Here in Melbourne AFL is dominant code, and traditionally been a weekend game. In fact was basically played 6 matches Saturday afternoons. When the League expanded into a national competition they started playing games Friday nights, Saturday arvo Saturday nights and Sundays. The marquee game of the round is normally a single Friday night fixture, normally at the G with 70K plus crowd.

Recently last few years (pre covid) they have experimented with Monday night games, (trying to copy NFL) but it's never really taken off, attendance wise. Now they have added Thursday nights which seems to be working.

As far s our game goes we have been in a continual mismanagement for decades and fixturing is just another idiotic example of how to disenfranchise an already confused audience.

Last night was a grand final rematch and the actual quality of play was the best so far and deserved a decent crowd, officially was 3.2k but from my guestimate was half that.

Until the game gets back to 2014-2016 type levels they should avoid midweek games at all costs.

Keeper having a nightmare. Under no pressure and chose to punch rather than catch, and you never punch into the middle of the park. Lovely finish, though.

Finally dusted off Saturdays debacle and now look forward to Friday night.

Our first continental adventure. Playing 9pm KO (Melbourne time) in Bangkok.
