Liverpool (H) | Post match thread

The highlights aren't going to tell you anything as they've been carefully edited to make it look more even than it was.
Watching the full match replay won't show me any replays of the penalty shout for Gabby early doors either.

Not really.

Our fans don't listen to Pep enough. Rivalry is not only about the final result, but also about the quality of performance. You can't control the result at 100 %, for luck plays a significant role in a low-scoring game like football. No matter how we play, the opposition always stands a chance to win/draw, especially if it's one of the best teams in the world.

Clearly, Pep was happier than Klopp after the game. Why? For two reasons: the draw left us in the driving seat, and we outperformed them. The latter was very important to Pep and the players.

Given that football involves chance, performances are the best predictor for success. You can luck your way to some wins or even trophies, but the quality of performances is the most solid basis for winning big trophies.

One of the main mistakes many posters make on football forums is that their perspective on the game is often distorted by the result at the expense of the performance. Had Mahrez scored that chance, the thread would have been completely different, and the performance would have been lauded as one of the greatest ever.

We'll play worse in some big games over the next weeks, but will score more goals and win. We played much worse at Sporting but won 5:0. That's football.
And I’m sure Pep was equally delighted that it was against a full strength Liverpool team, with their strongest looking bench in Klopp’s time, in a game they really wanted to win & threw everything at. We controlled massive parts of that game & created three times the amount of chances. Imagine you’re Klopp & the Liverpool squad this morning, that will be very sobering for them, they’ll know they got away with one and this could have a long term effect on a lot of variables going forward for them, Salah’s contract, squad investment, Klopp extension etc, now would be a very good time for Pep to sign & announce that contract

.....and have fans of united, toon, Wednesday, Barnsley, Chelsea, Norwich, Leeds, Bristol Rovers, Blackburn, Blades, Everton drinking in there on a Sunday evening. Is Chorlton a popular tourist destination now or were your really in a sports bar in Benidorm?
Chorlton is full of out of towners, some parts you’d be hard pushed to hear a Manc accent

You are not alone in thinking it contributed. It was a topi c onf conversation where I sit in the ground.

Clear the link is indirect and you can debate how siginificant it was. However, what is not in much doubt is that it was an awful kick-off, an unforced error that ceded possession unecessarily.

I think we should have tried to reatin possession and control the game from the k/o.
So it did happen? Thanks, Stoned Rose had me doubting myself and thinking I’d dreamt it.

We will drop points possibly at Wolves and West Ham. What people aren't taking in to account is the high intensity games we have coming up, Atletico and then the semi final which will take shit loads of energy out of the players. We haven't the squad depth to keep chopping and changing as well, contrary to what everyone else thinks so something will have to give.
Liverpool have more options now, their bench is very strong and they could quite easily play all nine subs yesterday in an 11 and still win the majority of prem matches.
Would it be that much of a disaster if we went out of the champs on Wednesday and put everything in to the fa cup and league?
Ha ha. Pull your nappy up you wet wipe.

Blimey did we lose ? I thought we were superb considering we don’t have a recognised striker. What about how we kept the best forward line in the country quiet ? No mention of that in your post.

When you put in a brilliant performance and still fail to win it can feel like a loss. Especially in a game like this.

Before the game I’d have taken a draw all day long. After the game it feels like a missed opportunity that we could come to regret.

After sleeping on it that is how I feel as well

I thought walker showed clearly who the best right back in the country is.

I think he already knows.

The fact Southgate has decided he can just have the midseason international breaks off because he's 100% going to be in the squad and the rest is more useful than playing friendlies says it all.

Yesterday proved we are streets ahead of that shower, however they are far more clinical than us. We should of smashed them yesterday and I am hopeful we will win the league but we will only have ourselves to blame - mistakes do cost us but when we look back at the season, Southampton both games, Palace away - there's 6 points if we were clinical in finishing the chances we had

Definitely a missed opportunity, but still a great performance and it was more important not to lose that than to win it. Pep and players were buzzing after the game, were as Klopp had a hint of dissapointment, I can see us going on a run now of the back of that after a dip in performances for a few weeks. Firmly in the driving seat

The mahrez chance at the end makes me feel gutted we didn't go 4 pts clear.
For someone with such a cultured left foot why does he always trying smashing his shots with power?
A little panache sometimes wouldn't go a miss

Though he tried a delicate chip and bottled it a bit, sadly
