I’ve never seen a reputable source report it tbh. It’s just one of those rumours that is so widespread online that many people simply assume it to be true, even though that’s not necessarily the case. A bit like the accusation that City are guilty of “financial doping”. Only difference is that we have actually cleared our name in the highest court possible for that charge.

It was an Irish journalist/blogger based in Russia who first raised it. Said there were injunctions flying about UK sports desks after some got wind of it, so they were gagged on the grounds of ‘medical confidentiality’

There's a post on it somewhere on here with a video of what I think was a radio talk show with the host, a Liverpool fan, talking about exactly this. I only got a glance so I'm not sure of the detail, hopefully someone will post a link.
