Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

If things keep on going as they are economically the cost of constructing an expanded or new North Stand in 3 years time after the Coop Live Arena is build will have rocketed.

City could and should have expanded the North Stand 3 years ago. I appreciate hindsight is a wonderful thing, and the football business has many twists and turns on and off the pitch, but we've still got Pep (hopefully he'll renew his contract again?), Haaland, the Coop Arena will be finished in 2 years time, and we would have also had a 60,000+ capacity Etihad with a proper North Stand home end for the fans.

yeah its not been well planned at all to be honest has it? if its to start after the new arena opens then we are looking at 4 more years???? We have people desperate to get season tickets and cant get them so missing out on revenues?

My mates an architect and according to him no chance of building a one tier stand as the configuration would be impossible to fit in with the wire continary of the current ground that supports the roof ! I haven't a clue but he said you only have to look at the south stand extention will still has the roof support from the original stand running across it !

I really shouldn't question your mate who's an Architect, but Architect's and Engineers can come up with solutions to solve almost any building design problem. I'm sure there's a solution to creating a single tier North Stand whilsts still supporting the current and remaining roof around the Etihad. Maybe not?

As you say.

Whatever the thinking and reasons City have missed a trick.

My other niggle, not a gripe, is the Collar Site still hasn't been developed 14 years after Sheikh Mansour bought the club, and 15 years after Manchester won the Super Casino contest.

I appreciate City have built the CFA (one of the best in the World), expanded the Etihad, and invested in the wider Etihad Campus, and are now half funding (CFG) the Coop Live Arena.

all true but they have also managed to get money back from selling shares to the americans and chinese? There will be business trade between the states and china with UAE on the back of these guys dealing with city as well? Like we say we are blessed with our owner and what they have done but lets not kid ourselves either, they had and continue to have the funds to have made the Etihad a truly brilliant stadium that could host european finals etc? Get it expanded, new roof or at least the corners covered in or fixed and the LED wrap around it and make it a landmark for the best club in the world.

If fuel prices keep rising, HRH should have enough small change for a brand new super stadium before June is out.

I have no idea, but I don't see how they could do a single tier without closures of the stand. Which for me isn't worthwhile as the benefits of a single tier over a large second tier aren't that great.

A larger second tier would be OK. But if we're all being honest a single tier would look better and is more preferable. How City and their Architects would incorprate a single tier into the current stadium design is anyones guess. It would probably leave the North End of the Etihad unsightly?

This is the problem - they chose not to extend at the same time as South Stand and have missed the excitement of Haaland and multiple titles. IF they decided to extend after the Arena opens in 2024 you would be looking at 2026 as the opening date. Pep and Håaland will probably be long gone by then.

But the facts are they ripped out 1200 seats last Summer - and there is very little news circulating about any extensions starting after the Arena has finished other than wishful thinking on here.

Good call. Didn't think of that. He could also sell off more of the CFG to raise money. Not that he would need to.

True.

Ripping the seats out meant more revenue via the new advertising boards instead. Those ripped out seats will be added back into any North Stand expansion, if it ever happens, as you say. Can't see many more if any corporate areas being made. Think we've now maxed out on them inside the Etihad.

I’m not disagreeing with you but there is an exponential cost ratio when it comes to experimental design and build projects.

Genuine question though, how did the three roofs stay up when it was the Commonwealth Games before the stadium was reconfigured for football and the NS added.

The wire and support poles were already fitted pre games

The cable net runs under the South stand does it not? It doesn't support the South stand roof at all and regardless of 1,2 or 3 tiers, the North stand roof won't be any different. They could duplicate the South stand and leave the cable net supporting the E & W roofs but it restricts the height of the S stand due to line of sight. I can see them replacing the E & W roofs at the same time as expanding the N stand so they can finally remove the entire cable net system. That may explain the delay as much as anything.
Don't know only going on what I was told but is the cable necessary to support the rest of the roof that joins the east and west stands ?

So they could remove the North Stand and leave that there, maybe? Or perhaps it’s too risky, slow or expensive to de-construct the stand without affecting the wire. Worth it for 7k seats or whatever? Not for me, I think a 75k seater would be a real statement for the club and Manchester, seeing as the one in the neighbouring borough is an embarrassment.

Also the North Stand extention would be a more complex build as they would need to remove part of City Sq and perhaps the club store as well and relocating them on a temporary basis would become an issue !

Thinks its to do with the hight of a one tier stand the cable across the top of the stand supports both the East and West stand and couldn't be raised any higher but much more clever people than me I'm sure will be working on the project !
