Hip Hop/Rap Appreciation thread

It was great in the beginning and then everyone started getting in on the money and clout.

I think some of the best of it was the town beefs rather than individuals. When KRS ONE/ BDP stepped in, I think the game was done.

Although Nas' fight with everyone (well Cormega and Jay Z) was entertaining!

Thank feck for Public Enemy at the that point for me, though!
Good points made there.

Make you right about the clout chasers jumpin on the bandwagon!

I was glad the KRS Vs X-Clan spat didn't spiral ...there was so much knowledge coming out of both camps to benefit the masses equally.

Nas Vs Jay Z is still inconclusive n not definitive to me personally, tho have to agree to its edutainment at its height.
Ether? or Super Ugly? ...after all this time i still find it an hard one to call, it were one hell of a mud fight tho.

Jay Z - Super ugly

Nas - Ether

That's a draw! Funnily enough, I don't really rock with Jay Z, although he's made one or two classics. Sayin' that, though, everything Nas says rings true about Carter taking styles and claiming.

That used to ring in my brain, back in the day,s o I stopped listening to his stuff. 'Blueprint' was, actually, the last of his I bothered with!

(perfect for mixing!)

Keith Murray - Bad day

Ice Cube - It was a good day

...props to, The Isley Brothers ~ Footsteps in the dark!

I never even knew they had a beef at the time, that side of hip hop was not on my radar. never rated Jay Zed and Nas should have quit after recording It Was Written. Folk say Jay is the best, he has never made anything close to Illmatics perfection.

I've not bought a Jay Z vinyl album since The Blueprint n checked for most of his stuff previous to it, last 12" i bought of his was Lost One cos i dug the beat, stopped fuckin with his shit soon as his mixing with higher echelons became more n more weirder n suspect ...his Best of both worlds collab with weird-Kelly was the last straw.

As said tho, did find the Nas n Jay spat entertainin.

As for Nas, i did get his more recent King's Disease 1 n part 2 vinyl albums jus to have 5 of the tracks on wax that i couldn't get on 12s. There were many periods i went off his stuff too.

Truth be told, there were many times i closed my ear to hip hop, especially once it got infested with pranksters n wankster mumbling lil fucktards who can't even pee straight.

Apart from the ATL, i've never really taken to what's come from out the South, funny thang is, the South were/are historically positioned to of give the world somethang that bangs the legs off of the table n haven't done so imo. Granted my affiliations lay East, Mid-west n West for their ability to drop or sample a tight n funky ass beat.

Was listening to Soul, Jazz, Funk n Grooves plus Reggae music from i were able to stand up knew-high n wiggle my sorry behind to the beats as a toddler n thus have always liked the old school hip hop n rap beat that give nodding acknowledgement or compliment a sampled precursor or progenitor etc.

I love my southern stuff. Randomly bought Three 6 mafias 1st album after seeing the ad in the source and still love it, bought a fair few things from Houston too, TGC and obviously anything Rap a Lot. Southenplayalistic is still one of my favourite albums ever.
Bizarrely round about 03 I zoned out of hip hop as it lost something for me and started listening to lots of Manchester stuff as in the 90s I was hip hop only, people assumed as I wore City tops I was an Oasis fan, nope, I’m a f’ing City fan. The only one in Inverness.

Agree the older stuff and sampling. Because I’m a geek I started buying the stuff that was being sampled, fell in love with P Funk, James brown and ended up with all the Ultimate Breaks and beats. Not bad living in a town with zero record shops.

Having the precursor sample originals on vinyl is defo a must, audio cassette tapes also suffice ...never liked CDs n only really ever used em with a pitch control for the purpose of acapella or using the voice of Stand Up comedians to run over instrumentals.

P Funk forever!

For a long time now you can sense Jay-Z just doesn't have anything to rap about now other than his millions, his wife or kids.

Although he did just do a decent track on Pusha Ts new album

Last Jay-Z album I could listen to with no skips will of been the Black Album for sure.

Did you check 'The Grey Album' with Dangermouse mixing The Beatles with it?

Although the general public will near hear it.

one album I’d love to listen to be the sole new wu tang album that was sold for millions.

beliebe the person who bought it is in trouble with the authorities & they have it now.

the other is Detox.

Oh, well in that case its not too bad then missing out.

I know Method Man was on stage recently with the Sons of Wu (2nd Generation Wu is the group name) and apparently they are all doing a joint album.

ODB's son sounds just like him

Proper lil clone of his pops is YDB.

Mind, he did go bit over the top jumpin on tables when appearing with his seniors on Tiny Desk concert, hope he blossoms to become his own man in his own right!

What's your thoughts on An American Saga?

Only time will tell.

I will be honest, I haven't watched it. So much content out there at present I haven't finished.

The upcoming Murder Inc documentary looks like it will be a half decent watch. Also the Supreme team documentary that Nas has been involved in looks another good watch.

One show I was enjoying watching was about the formation of Ruff Ryders.

Was able to watch one episode and then since then its disappeared :(

I have been watching a lot of content from Vlad over on youtube, I know some think he's a grass and makes some silly comments but he has some good interviews recently.
