Hip Hop/Rap Appreciation thread

For a long time now you can sense Jay-Z just doesn't have anything to rap about now other than his millions, his wife or kids.

Although he did just do a decent track on Pusha Ts new album

Last Jay-Z album I could listen to with no skips will of been the Black Album for sure.
Think Jay Z's overall discography is a bit underrated, you know.

Obviously he's really well regarded and he's hardly underrated as an MC but some of his "lesser" albums have got loads of terrific stuff that gets overlooked imo.

He's obviously got his three classics (Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint, The Black Album) and the odd stinker (Magna Carta, Unfinished Business) but albums like In My Lifetime, The Dynasty, American Gangster, and The Blueprint 3 are all pretty underrated by hip hop heads.

Not sure why. Maybe serious heads see them as pop albums and get a bit sniffy about them? I don't think he's ever had a run of undisputed classics like Ice Cube, Eminem, Kendrick, or whoever, but the lesser parts of his discography are a lot stronger than they're given credit for imo.

Only time will tell.

I will be honest, I haven't watched it. So much content out there at present I haven't finished.

The upcoming Murder Inc documentary looks like it will be a half decent watch. Also the Supreme team documentary that Nas has been involved in looks another good watch.

One show I was enjoying watching was about the formation of Ruff Ryders.

Was able to watch one episode and then since then its disappeared :(

I have been watching a lot of content from Vlad over on youtube, I know some think he's a grass and makes some silly comments but he has some good interviews recently.
I haven't got round to watching whole of the Saga series as yet, the more RZA keeps droppin truth bombs about it the less rush i'm in to watch, back-back is the way i normally like to take in series n doco's so no doubt will eventually when i find time.

Looking forward to seeing the Supreme Team doc, BK, BX n Harlem have always took the shine but Queens wasn't as sleepy as some folk seemed to think!

Not had chance to watch the Ruff Ryders one, i do like Yonkers as an area though.

I try my best to look past some of the questionable ways Vlad corners his victims n slowly plays with em like a Killer whale does it's prey but i always end up concluding it's tantamount to dry snitchin. He has done some good ones though as you say, granted.

Oh I agree, I just think his recent stuff is abit meh.

Btw The Dynasty was the first Jay-Z album I ever listened to, and my favourite album of his for sure.

This song is one of my favourite

I also enjoyed AG album, some of the tracks or samples they used from the film made it an enjoyable listen.

Its strange isn't it, like he's wanting them to slip up.

I see from one of his recent ones (faizon) upset Jay-Z so much he responded on Wax on the track he did with Pusha T

PC Vlad, I make it a general rule to never trust a Ukrainian. Kev Mac has great stuff though, as does Alex Alonso.

Bit of a change of subject, but the new Kendrick really is phenomenal.

Trying to think of literally any other solo rapper in history with a 1 to 5 run (or 1 to 6 if you count Untitled Unmastered as a full album) that's as good as Section 80, GKMC, TPAB, Damn, and Mr. Morale.

A lot of rappers have 1 to 3 runs that are excellent (Ice Cube, Eminem, Redman, the list goes on), a smaller number of rappers have excellent 1 to 4 runs, but 1 to 5? I think that's a pretty exclusive club.

DOOM maybe, under his various names? Kanye? Rakim maybe, if you categorise The 18th Letter alongside his stuff with Eric B? Kool G Rap maybe, if you categorise 456 alongside his stuff with DJ Polo?

Anyway, Kendrick is rare, I think.

Don't know if he's behind the direction of his own video's or not but truth be told a lot of em are very creative, indeed!

Seems to keep reinventing himself, signs of a good artist with a lot more in his bag as he continues to walk side by side with an ever changing industry.

His new album is amazing, still gutted we haven't seen a Black Hippy album officially come out.

Eminem has a lot more decent albums but I agree on the first 3 albums. Despite hating it at the time, and apart from a few songs I skip, going back on the album I would put that in the run.

I would definitely add Kanye to this list.

n95 was actually filmed before Covid.

His videos are amazing. Can see him doing alot more acting.

Agreed, some right thought provoking videos, knows how to captivate minds in an era where most are losing attention span.

It's nice to see changes in video content.

UK scene needs to do it now, its either semi naked women and rapping about pussy. Or all flexing their Canada Goose jackets whilst driving rental vehicles.

Kendrick Lamar - The heart Pt.5

(luv the Marvin Gaye sample)

Great video and track. All 5 have been superb.

Never have liked hip hop or rap. I do though think there are some very talented people out there but for me thats the problem, the talent always gets outshined by the gangster element of it all. I wish its roots werent embedded in the street violence it came from, but tbh it wouldnt be as good if it wasnt for where it came from, like all music.

What are you talking about?

Hip Hop/ Rap's root weren't embedded in gangster elements. It/ we started out vibing and partying with the height of that coming from the sounds of Afrika Bamabaataa and Soulsonic Force

to Digital Underground trying to revive that same feeling

We had classics like 'Captain Rock'

THAT was Hip Hop. Rap is its bastard son who became Hip Hop's unsavoury carer.

Twas sparring with a Ukrainian earlier this evening, he roundhouse kicked me on my left side with the power of a fuckin horse, a proper 90Kg of a kick n'all, managed to teep him off of his feet with me lil 79Kg self, haha
