It’s finally online-the Peter Swales video we’ve been waiting for P31

The fact that he took an assistant manager's job at Cardiff after leaving City and then came back to coach our reserves and juniors suggests you're right. Despite that last period with Allison, he'd surely done well enough at Maine Road before that to have warranted a chance somewhere else in a manager's job if he'd kept applying for positions that came up.
Forgot he went to Cardiff, though it almost certainly explains why Dave and Gary Bennett went there

Eric talked about Sidney’s relationship with Busby being the connection and the interest in joining Utd’s board. Albert Alexander was asked to join Utd’s board by Busby before he was a City director but Albert turned it down. The story told to me was that Sidney waited for his turn to be asked but it never came so he joined City’s. One of the things I’m always passionate about is triangulation and getting every angle covered but all too often with directors they have vastly different views. Facts are often loose with them and their stories change. If only everything was on the record and documented.
I always wondered if Halford kept a journal/diary. That man would have known where all the bodies were buried

Often feel that Swales saw himself in Allison, both being brash type of characters, possibly he may have felt Tony Book to be not high profile enough for his own ego,as it was always centred on Swales being the main man,and perhaps Allison reflected that publicity onto Swales, which narcissistic people are usually good at doing.

I got to chat to Tony a fair few times and his group of friends when they all used to holiday in Tenerife. He was a lovely bloke as was his friends. I didn't want to badger him too much about football bit his best friend from childhood told me Tony felt badly let down by Malcolm.
I think Malcolm was probably ‘that’ mate, we all have them.
Did Tony have a place over there or just a regular visitor? Iirc you lived there for a bit? Love the place

Some of the things that happened makes you wonder was Swales taking the piss
but I will say he went all in with Malcolm Allison 2nd stint at the club and spent all the money on an idea that even the blind would see a mile off was doomed to fail

looking back now, Manchester city would have had a great chance of catching or competing over the next 5 years in chasing Liverpool if they stuck with Tony Book's team, we were close in terms of fighting on a level playing field and won silverware, OK it was the league cup but what a base to work from with the youth we had

Gary James

I think there is a good book about how close was Tony Book becoming a great manager, even becoming an England manager of the future
I'm not so sure, City finished 1978-79 in 15th which was a very disappointing season by the standard of the previous ones. This being part of what caused Swales to act & bring back Allison, practically bankrupting the club in the process over the next few months/years.

Now, I'm not saying if a better appointment had been made with more shrewd investment/decision making (ie. not selling all of our international players) we could of got back competing again, I think we could have, but we certainly were nowhere near Liverpool/major honours in that final season under Book.

As others have suggested, that season we threw the kichen sink at an exciting UEFA Cup campaign?

Somebody else pointed out that playing in Europe may have taken its toll on the team and that's why we finished 15th, but in a short space of time Swales and city let Allison dismantle a very good squad built by Tony book and spend all our money on worst players than we already sold,

The impression i got regarding Tony was especially when he was coaching the kids was that he was as hard a snails, very competitive and took no shit, i don't think that clip does him justice. He i'm sure knew was that despot with the comb over was like and wanted to keep his job.
White and lakes books confirm him and pardoe were very tough with the kids

I was about 9 when Swales took over & didnt really understand the workings of the club but my old dad always used to say We would never do any good under Swales,
We still had season tickets but as the years went on Dad stopped going on a regular basis & I moved into the Kippax as I got older, I think what finished it for dad going to games was when Swales took on Billy McNeil as manager & Swales said something along the lines of "if he goes I go" Talking about McNeil,
Needless to say McNeil went & Swales stayed where he was, very sad really as we could & should have been one of the top clubs during that time & lost a lot of potential fans during that era.

Wasn’t he just the club doctor?
As answered elsewhere previously, Luft was the club doctor.
But Rose was considered a genuine superstar in surgery. Abdominal injuries was his speciality.
Quietly worked on everyone from SAS officers blown up in Belfast to members of the royal family and average Manc kids in between
It truly beggars belief that such a capable man would be taken in by a two bob TV rental salesman

Alison came in halfway through that season

No they all came over in June every year and stayed at the Vulcano hotel and drank in the Brahms and List every night.
