It's Quiet 17 - Glory Thread

I remember how much everyone including myself lost their minds when we didn't land a striker last summer. baffling decision, amateur, unserious. Turned out fine. Let's see what happens here but I think we'll be just fine
Not having a striker is completely different to not having a left back imo.

Yeah... not the same. Going into the season with like 9 attackers who can play false 9 and 2 fullbacks is massively different, hahah.

Agreed. Might be walking on thin ice here, but I think Cancelo is massively overrated. He’s capable of doing incredible things and will at times look like the best full-back in the world, but he’s very ineffective. For every good involvement (pass, cross, tackle etc.) there’s at least 2 bad ones. The very definition of a high risk, high reward player. I’d love to see Kabore in a slightly better league, seems like we could have a Walker replacement already at our club. Also have very big hopes for Rico Lewis, but at 17 he’s needs least 2 more seasons
The main reason Juventus moved on from him was mainly because of his inconsistent nature.

Credit to him for at one point becoming recognized as a top back in the world but in reality he's not. He is 100% overrated, I agree, and another player who benefits greatly playing with the players he's surrounded by at City. He's had his moments of brilliance over the past two years and he's also been abysmal at times.

There's a time to go for it and a time to keep it simple. He never keeps it simple. By always going for the spectacular he fucks up quite a bit. Add in the fact that he's a poor defender and worse, an unwilling defender, and to me he has no business being a FB. He would be more suited playing in a role further up the field.

If you want to see a true world class attacking FB over an extended period of years at both club and country take some time to go back and watch Jordi Alba play. If Cucurella can be 80% the player Alba was over his career we'd be getting a great fit for maybe the next 7 to 10 years. JMO.

But we do have a left back. We actually had him last year, too, and that turned out fine. With all the respect to zinny he played like 1400 minutes last season.

It’s a bit gutting we haven’t sorted the left back situation out before the start. Especially after a great striker now joining us.

Every year we seem to have a weak spot just not sure who can cover now zinc has gone. Jigsaw never seems complete.

I suppose it could be worse we, Utd have lost their jigsaw & just have an empty box

While I agree that we don't need superstars in every position, I don't think we just want to bring stop-gap/competent pros in either, otherwise you can be stuck with them taking up a squad place at a later date. It looks very much to me that we would prefer a smaller squad of higher quality players.

Anyway, the club will decide what we do from here. Maybe they feel we have enough players that could do a short-term job in that position, whether first teamers or younger players.
In general I agree with you, but one competent pro for cover who can fill in adequately won't kill the squad space or the budget.

Fuck it I was all aboard the Cucurella train but Borna Sosa looks a quality player and would cost half the price.

We just need someone who can stretch the play from left back and deliver a good cross. I don’t think this player should be too hard to find but it’s imperative that we do bring them in for this season if we're to challenge on all fronts.

I guess we had that in Zinchenko but wanted something better, though he was £30M+ not 10-15M as you mentioned. Not sure what kind of competent you get for that really.

Anyway, let's see what happens from here.

Funny I was going to say the same thing about Zin but then decided to skip it for now.

Any decent winger against cancelo and hes not that good. He's brilliant for the mid table / lower table games. But he's not a left back for the top games. Attacking brilliant, defensively he's a liability at times. We desperately need a left back for the top games especially in one off games in the champions league.
