They wasted months trying to get players they couldn’t/wouldn’t pay the required fee for.

They seem to take the word of agents as gospel, and when the selling club doesn’t play ball don’t have a back up plan.

Edit: also it’s 100% a perception thing, if there was a 49.5m release clause in his contract he’d of signed by now.

Who have we not had a back up for?

We wanted Van Dijk, got Laporte.

Wanted Sanchez, got Mahrez.

Wanted Jorginho, got Rodri.

Wanted Koulibaly, got Dias.

Wanted Kane, got Haaland.


What does “wasting months” even mean? It’s another one of these phrases that comes from this childish attitude that all their efforts are focused on 1 transfer.

He was linked in May as our number 1 target and personal terms agreed, it’s now August season starts in 4 days and he’s seemingly off to Chelsea and we’ve sold Zinchenko with no replacement lined up.

Of course we have wasted months.

And we’ve decided to make that overstretched defence smaller and weaker.

I hope that if they aren’t even close to the top for when the World Cup starts that Tuchel has to go he’s now been given a rather large amount of money for a squad that is not even in the race for anything past February.

Okay, I'm not privy to what's going on there, but if they knew that then i'm surprised they didn't try to get him in before pre-season.

I think that’s based on the fact that Chelsea doesn’t sell their backup option before having a replacement in line like City did :/

Do find it hard to fathom that we are the same club who spent £100 mil on grealish but won’t pay £50 mil for cucurella.

Yes I know grealish was a release clause but we didn’t have to target him. I said last summer I don’t think grealish is anywhere near worth £100 mil and I still don’t now. He doesn’t even get into our best starting line up

Where as £50 mil for a top quality lb seems a fair price to me. Especially as we have bought full backs for that price previously.

He's had one decent season in a very average mid table side, he’s had one international call up and his only current achievement to date is winning Brightons best player of the season award!
let’s not kid ourselves we are looking to buy a world beater for £50m here, we are looking at a player we deem potentially decent and are willing to take a risk at the right price to try it out. However, £50m isn’t a fair price in our eyes when the top LB’s in the world currently have fetched £50m themselves. Are we now suggesting he’s the top dog lb In the world of football or are we being realistic and seeing a prospect that’s overpriced?
Add to that Brighton are now sending out the brief last night that it will take an offer “in excess” of £50m not £50m full stop. The goalposts keep moving so we have to draw the line somewhere.
