Gas & Electricity

I wrongly assumed that the price cap was just that: a fixed amount per unit.

But even the Money Saving Expert site says that these are just averages and that there are regional variations, so I don't know how they work it all out.

They make it up as they go along. Didn't a chief executive of one of the companies admit it was a cash cow, a licence to print money?

I notice Boris is calling for households across Europe to endure the energy crisis to support the Ukraine. By endure I take it he means pay for? Again he's calling for households ie Joe public to endure rather than the energy companies to dig into their profit margin.

The Tories love using this rhetoric. "Hey we know you're suffering, but look over there people are suffering more than you, be grateful!" They use it a lot when people want a pay rise. I swear they deliberately keep nurses and carers pay low just so they can use them as a guilt trip and to demonise anyone wanted a pay rise

Cancelled my direct debit last week and I’ll be paying paper bills from now on. British gas have been taking £590 per month for the last few months (have an electric vehicle) & would not lower the direct debit after I informed them I sold the EV, it was clear I was using less electricity for 2 months. Funnily enough it only showed I had £1200 credit with them after I cancelled the DD.

Standard Tory brown nose response. I've heard similar from managers at a previous place of work. What have troubles in Ukraine (which are tragic) got to do with the price of fish? They didn't peddle this line when they handed out PPE contracts to their pals.

The laughable thing is, millions of people can't just suck it up and say"oh well" as if it's beer going up 5p. People simply do not have enough money to pay. There is gonna be a massive snow ball effect if nothing done by these out of touch cunts.

I agree, we are already in a ridiculous cycle of inflation. Cost Price Increases are being passed on to consumers, consumers then demand wage increases, businesses issue pay rises then increase their costs and repeat.

Something urgent needs to slow this down / stop the leak. Tighter regulation on energy companies operating in the UK for a start.

Also I'm fucking sick of hearing the term "price cap". It isn't a cap if the price keeps going up.
This is huge this energy crisis, this will launch more people in to poverty.

And folks, please remember...

The fuel price cap is the MAXIMUM your supplier can charge. They don't actually have to charge that much so register your disgust at profiteering every chance you get.

Oh, and if someone tells you the French are keeping prices down, that's because EDF can put them up here to compensate.

We called a family meeting last night regarding the coming winter. We voted to not heat the house this winter and instead use the money we would have spent on the heating bill in our local pubs, restaurants, independent food shops and artisanal producers. Going cold for one winter to support our local business and ensure they are still there when this passes is the least we can all do.

Now there’s a thought. Imagine everyone on the piss and the shareholders getting fuck all.

I like this idea. Go out, get pissed, save the world.

There's definitely something in this idea. My fix with EDF doesn't end until September 30th next year so not really much point in me doing it, but anyone facing bills of, say, £600-£700 in January and February could have the heating on half as much or less and eat plenty of nights out into the bargain. Obviously, for a family of four that would be quite costly so they won't be able to do it every night and be on the right side, but for a couple it can be done cheaper. And a single person could probably go down their local 'spoons and have a few pints and a curry every night of the week and still be in profit if they keep the heating off while they're out of the house!

There is a general view that gas and electricity suppliers are profiteering. Hitherto, that has not been the case. Overall such suppliers have a profit margin of about 5%.
(Ebit). Not so long ago, suppliers were exiting the market, forcibly or by choice.
The profiteers are the distribution networks whose equivalent margin is about 40%. The justification for this is the level of investment needed to modernise and maintain the networks, but I think the regulator has had the wool pulled over his eyes, not for the first time. The networks never seem to spend quite what they said to the regulator was in their plans. Network shares trade at a premium.
So, don’t blame your gas/electricity supplier, get on to your local network and moan at them.
The only exception might be Centrica which appears to have a greater margin than all other retailers.
This begs the question: are the press asleep or just lazy?

I worked out that if I turned my heating off for three winter months, I could have 10 pints a day, every day, for the whole winter. Mrs KS had better not overdo it on the sherry.

It’s not only affecting small businesses. CF Fertilisers in Teeside is pausing production due to energy costs. A by-product of producing fertiliser is CO2 which is used in many food and drink industries.

CF said it has decided to pause production amid concerns its costs will continue to surge in the coming months.

“This decision raises serious concerns for the sustainable supply of CO2 to the brewing and pub industry,”

“At current natural gas and carbon prices, CF Fertilisers UK’s ammonia production is uneconomical, with marginal costs above £2,000 per tonne and global ammonia prices at about half that level,” the company added.

Im a sole trader so shitting bricks that not only my bills are going up but that business will fall off a cliff. Ive been through recessions and such things before and its tough.
