Belittling towards a 19 year old girl?

Listen to yourself ffs haha.

Her career will either stand up to the scrutiny professional sport brings or it won’t.

Last time I looked there wasn’t some 19 year old girl category which protects her but nice try.

indeed time will tell

at present, she's 19, has a won a US Open and everyone seems convinced her career is over based on a few defeats since.

maybe if everyone got off her back she will potentially win a major again, she has years and years ahead of her. good luck to her.

Get off her back!? Come on in this day and age every successful sport person should know how the world works and social media! You need a thick skin and a top mentality…

Fair enough

just find it a shame so many young sports players have to have a tough mentality against social media abuse from their own 'supporters'

Bar Murray she has acheived more than any other british player since Wade.Just like young footballers there are peaks and troughs.
Good luck to her make as much money as she can.Hopefully she will come again. If not they can never take away what she acheived.

Again, get off her back?

She is a pro Tennis player. Handle the heat or get out the kitchen springs to mind.

Obviously she's still incredibly young but you just feel there's a good chance that last years win was one of those freak things that occasionally happen and she'll never be able to repeat.

Hopefully I'm proven to be talking rubbish, again...
But crucially she did win one, something I'd suggest the vast majority of this board will never do.

If she never wins again it makes no difference, she still won a major and as a qualifier, amazing stuff.

Shame that she has been very sporadic since but shit happens.

I can never understand the fact that some people like to knock her and add in odd comments about becoming a model or the fact she earned 19m last year, at the end of the day, still won a major tennis tournament and it will be in the history books forever.

Good luck to the girl moving forward.

Agreed. This is the career she has chosen. If she wanted anonymity, she should have gone and worked in an office. The rewards on offer are great, of course. But when she got away to such a flier early in her career, she then has standards expected of her. Is it fair? Possibly not. But that's the world we're living in.

Most players find the first year full time on the circuit pretty daunting. She has done as well as most. It’s from now onwards that we can make a judgement as to how good she is.
Chopping and changing coaches has done her no favours and she needs to settle her arrangements. She has real talent, so I expect her to improve over the next 12 months.

People are questioning why she was able to win a slam last year and hardly be able to win a match anywhere this.

What she hears is down to what her sponsors are willing to pay her.

If anyone wants an easy 19m, just win a tennis grand slam.

Simples.

Her record in this calendar year is w13 l16

Too much too soon for the kid.

People forget she's still one and the pressure that come with it. The lure of the celebrity etc.

She will learn over time. If she plays it right she won't have to work again when she hit her 30's. Be it in her main profession or a TV role.

Which is pretty dreadful.

That could mean she’s won 13 first round games against the world’s number 500 and gone out in the second round 13 times and the first 3.
She has made 2 quarter finals and several r16 of the top level tourneys. In Cincinnati she beat both Azarenka and Serena. Not so dusty. Her ranking was heavily skewed by the double points for US Open which she has now lost, hence the tumble.

It can’t be that many if she’s only won 13 games. Getting to a quarter final means about 3 wins, which make up nearly half of her total wins for the season.

At rank 80, she is exactly where you would expect a 19 year old newcomer to be, if she had talent. Making the top 100 is usually the aim for such players. Her Q in Madrid was on clay and at Cincinnati it was hard court, which suggests a certain all round efficiency.
What “can’t be that many”?

I’m not writing her off, I’m suggesting she’s not reached anywhere her potential this season.

Google “Raducanu current year record” and compare her to any other first year pro you like. She is the tennis equivalent of, say, a 19 year old footballer who scores a hat trick on his debut but is not a world beater immediately after. Some make it, some don’t. Patience is a virtue.

You obviously know more about the nuances of tennis than me.

I’m merely an occasional armchair fan.

99% of matches bore me, but the 1% can be some of the best sport you could ever see.

I’ve only seen a few of her matches this year and she looked nothing like she did in the US Open last year. Movement and timing were so different.

Hopefully she finds some stability and is able to focus on her game. She obviously has the talent to be up there with the best.

Oh, the BBC will be chomping at Clare Balding's bit!
