Just wondering if anyone on here does much of their running on a treadmill?
I live in very rural Cumbria where the winters can be brutal. There are no streetlights nor pavements for miles around, so those sub-zero 5am runs in pitch-black January with a torch strapped to your forehead, two pairs of gloves and a balaclava aren't as much fun as springing though the fields amongst the hay bales and daisies on a sunny August day.
So I've finally caved in and bought a treadmill. The only time I've used one before was in hospital in 2015 when I was on a rehab programme following heart surgery, so it's all pretty new to me.
My observations:
- Running barefoot can murder the bottoms of your feet! I'd had the bright idea that I should eschew trainers since it's a fairly soft and flat surface, and thus I would save money by not having to buy as many pairs. I'm now soaking my feet in a hot bath... Regardless, I still want to try it but will just do short distances without the shoes and see if I can gradually toughen the skin over time.
- I'm a sweaty fecker at the best of times but dear God, I must have excreted a couple of gallons from running indoors, even with the window wide open. Completely soaked my towel and even my trainers are wet through! I've made the floors throughout the house wet, just by walking around afterwards!
- I always need to be distracted from the actual running, usually by music and podcasts. It was great to have the iPad in front of me so I could actually watch a film whilst running. This is a big bonus for me. I also expect to do some work: training course videos etc. I don't think I'll go quite as far as Zoom meetings whilst on a run though!
Any experiences or tips regarding treadmill running to share?
