Running thread

Did 18km today, first time I got out for that long in a while.

Highlight was when i ran past Fallowfield Wetherspoons, a bloke flagged me down mid run, to ask if I had any crack to sell.

I didn’t.
Nice work, yep that pub has its fair share of knobs that stand outside, had a lad try it with me last year, was running home from work, could see him a mile off, pissed/smacked up punching the shutters of the place next door, as I got closer he decided to have a swing at me, pure comedy!!
Old Chinese proverb , never swing at a 6ft bloke who is running towards you

Just wondering if anyone on here does much of their running on a treadmill?

I live in very rural Cumbria where the winters can be brutal. There are no streetlights nor pavements for miles around, so those sub-zero 5am runs in pitch-black January with a torch strapped to your forehead, two pairs of gloves and a balaclava aren't as much fun as springing though the fields amongst the hay bales and daisies on a sunny August day.

So I've finally caved in and bought a treadmill. The only time I've used one before was in hospital in 2015 when I was on a rehab programme following heart surgery, so it's all pretty new to me.

My observations:
  • Running barefoot can murder the bottoms of your feet! I'd had the bright idea that I should eschew trainers since it's a fairly soft and flat surface, and thus I would save money by not having to buy as many pairs. I'm now soaking my feet in a hot bath... Regardless, I still want to try it but will just do short distances without the shoes and see if I can gradually toughen the skin over time.

  • I'm a sweaty fecker at the best of times but dear God, I must have excreted a couple of gallons from running indoors, even with the window wide open. Completely soaked my towel and even my trainers are wet through! I've made the floors throughout the house wet, just by walking around afterwards!

  • I always need to be distracted from the actual running, usually by music and podcasts. It was great to have the iPad in front of me so I could actually watch a film whilst running. This is a big bonus for me. I also expect to do some work: training course videos etc. I don't think I'll go quite as far as Zoom meetings whilst on a run though!
Any experiences or tips regarding treadmill running to share?

Running the lap in Windermere next week, which is 48 miles, with 2500m of climbing. First time I've ever done anything near that long, never even done a marathon before. Trainings going well, did the Yorkshire 3 peaks in 5 hours 45 mins. Cannot for the life of me get the fueling correct though, just cannot put away the calories needed without wanting to throw up. Was struggling at the end of the 3 peaks and reckon that had something to do with lack of fuel. Read up and the advice is 250 calories an hour, which if I'm aiming for 13 hours, that's 3250 calories !! Anyone done a similar ultra before and advice on fueling

Interesting. But no experience of this and I can't give you any advice.

I had a phase of running on a treadmill, in the gym, a couple of years ago, during winter. It's just too boring for me though - I much prefer running outdoors.

My boredom buster was listening to audiobooks, which I do when outside also. The furthest I managed on a treadmill was 10km.

Great North Run next Sunday….

2 weeks ago I was really looking forward to it, did 17km at 5:50km which I was more than happy with.

Last week went for an 18km run and it was horrible, had to walk a few times and was 6:43km pace so a real step back.

This morning, wanted to do 12km and only managed just over 4km. My calves were sore for some reason and just became too painful.

So next week could be a disaster
