Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post-Match Thread

Not sure what Pep is trying to do this season with the crazy system that is leaving us all over the show.

We could have lost against Newcastle, thank fuck we were 0-2 down against Palace at half time and he had to change it.

Not to be deterred,Pep was back again with it today, players all over the show misplaced pass after misplaced pass.

We are dropping points and it is all on him.

Surely he must see what we see.

Then the Subs today,Bernado for Mahrez,a Guy who Bottles out of every 50/50 playing in a physical game.

Alvarez is not a Bench warmer,he is a fucking good player,a match winner.

Disgrace he didn't get on that Pitch.

He starts with that System at home to Spurs we will be 3-0 down in indr 30 minutes.
It’s the Haaland pressing conundrum that I was ridiculed for suggesting he may be benched for certain games.

When we have a false 9, our press is relentless and hugely effective.

With Haaland, we’re still adapting and it’s leaving our system exposed at times. It needs time to perfect.

Maybe mate - we all hope so, but its hard to look that far ahead in my opinion and i don't think most of us on here are that fucking entitled to think we'll win the league regardless.
win the league dont win the league ......I'll still be there week in week out. As always

I'm far from fucking entitled boss

Felt like a rinse and repeat of previous hiccups. Villa soak up the pressure. We are poor and they magic one legitimate shot on target and score. So frustrating but we have seen this before. It’s a long old season and i would not bet against us finishing top of the pile. For all those doom merchants who do you think will finish above us?

Didn't think we were near it in the first half, we likely would've been if Walker squares the ball to Haaland early but not to be.

Thought the second half up until their goal we should've put them away. Erling does his usual and scores, Kev hits the bar, Haaland has two saved and Villa rode their luck and scored a cracker, sometimes you just have to say fair play to the opposition. They aren't or didn't do anything special just rode their luck and put away their only chance. It happens, that's football.

No time to dwell on it, I thought Alvarez would've given them fits but hopefully he starts against Sevilla and Haaland can have a rest with the Spurs game coming up.

Take the point and move on for me. We'll have a few more games like this during the season so no need to throw the baby out with the bath water.
Far too sensible :-)

I am not talking about just this game though. He seems to be going through a poor run of form, for a long time. I have been one of his biggest fans but you have to say it as it is, same with Phil at the moment. And it isn't just me saying it.
Am 100% in agreement

Bernie and KDB had the RW locked off in the 2nd half. We were in complete control and Villa were never getting back in it. I don’t think Mahrez should be getting on the pitch. However, if that is the move, bring Gundo off and put Bernie in the middle.
Mahrez is part of the core team. So you saying I don't think Mahrez should never get on the pitch is fine to say, but ultimately crazy if you actually expect Pep to carry it out.

You should expect him to get subbed on and play games. Pep is expecting Mahrez to do something, and he played poorly.

Bernie in the middle for Gundogan is fine as well, but don't think it changes much.

We needed Alvarez on.

Just one of those off-day games of ours when the planets didn’t align.

The small time celebration by the villa keeper showed how much this game was meaningful to villa. Watch them rollover against other teams now.

Kind of Ironic,,,,,,The best thing that could have happened today is we go in at half time 0-2 down so Pep has to change our shape and go back to what we know best and go on to win.

For Pep not losing = no changes

Even with this info, I think the choice to bring Ake on, rather than Sergio Gomez (and move Cancelo to the right side) is strange to me.

Changing the formation with 10 minutes to go is not usually a successful tactic, especially when you are sending a player that has been off with his passing for most of the match up the pitch to be the deeplying playmaker.

Seem to miss a bit of a spark this evening. A lot of needless balls given away in stupid areas and a lot of balls off us going high and being won by them. Anyway not too fussed always a difficult game against them. Nice to see Grealish say hello to his ex team mates.

Absolute dross. I can't believe that Pep changed the team from Wednesday night. Foden needs a break and Alvarez needs to start as often as possible. Perfect chance wasted to get another 2 point cushion over the dippers.

And yet, if Stones heads a simple ball back to Ederson, we win that. It’s noticeable that the decision making by the English lads is usually left wanting.
