Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post-Match Thread

We controlled nearly every facet of the game and still only came away with a point. They capitalized on a mistake. We were sloppy at times definitely had at least a few chances where the extra pass would have seen us with another few goals. You simply can't win all games but we should have managed 3 pts yesterday... it happens and every player on our team on the pitch played their part. I don't understand the Mahrez substitution as IMO he's not the instant energy guy who will give us the best chance in the final minutes. Foden has been a bit stale the first few weeks so not sure I agree with him even starting yesterday... that said both of those variables switched could well have seen us drop points as well.

Either at the match or watching on TV I'm screaming, "Pass the fucking ball!!!" They hang onto it and then get pressed into a bad position, hurriedly get rid of it and lose possession as a result. As the opposition keeps hacking away at them it risks injuries too. It must drive Pep mad.
It drives me mad.

Pep tells his players to hold on to the ball till the player gets close to them then pass it because that leaves more space the problem is the specs that opened up was not filled with our player..
I can see that but close to them not up their backs in our own half.

After having time to reflect and hearing what souness said no problem didn't play well but could and should have won just hard to understand whoever plays wide don't seem to take their man on is a pep instruction bad day at the office but there will be more good ones but pep does take understanding about being vocal for five man subs but doesn't take advantage of it unless 3 or 4 nil up but who I am I to question pep
Not the end of the world but two points dropped against a poor side. They were a bad imitation of Newcastle a couple of weeks back. The goal was well taken but completely avoidable. Walker not covering run down the edge of the box and Cancelo slow to react. Stones who was one of our better performers on the day should have done much better with the initial header. Bad defending all around yet again.

Foden looks really out of sorts and Mahrez should have stayed sat on his arse. The lesson is that we need to be full on it every game something which is not easy to do week in week out and each and every season. On the plus side if Haaland stays fit he should hit 30 or more in the league alone so no need to panic.

The keeper was an utter disgrace, he made a save then has a chat with a Villa defender then goes down injured. This crap is creeping more and more into the game like this cramp nonsense. Only way to stop it is to make the ref send them to the sideline for treatment and be off for a minimum of 2 minutes. This will soon disappear then.

The first half was CB to CB to full back to winger to full back and then across to the other side before Cancelo played a hopeful pass and gave the ball away. The best moment came early and Walker somehow blazed it over when Haaland was free but he should have at least hit the target.

When we got the goal we should have made changes anyway. The game was screaming for Alvarez. Some energy and intensity up front.

A poor result, particularly as we have Spurs this weekend and Liverpool drew again. They will find form when their players return and we let Villa back in despite them offering very little. Our build up play was all too predictable and Alvarez would have given us a different approach. But we move on. If we fail to beat Spurs we have had a pretty average start to the season considering who we have played. If we beat them then it's been decent and we can push on.

Thats whats needed off for a five min treatment period ...plus 3 mins for getting them off... 8 x mins with second choice keeper...make othrrs think

Agree, foden was dogshit yesterday. How he stayed on the full 90 with Alvarez waiting is another one of those strange Pep non sub making decisions

100% agree. Even extend to 5 minutes if the medics come on.

Even at 90 minutes we were still crabbing our way across our back line . We looked a bit one dimensional yesterday / it was get it to Haaland that’s all we had.

We were poor i felt but I still felt we done enough to win the game. Bit wasteful in front of goal again.

Walker and Foden both should be dropped. Both have started this season abysmally. We need to be playing BOTH Haaland and Alvarez as much as possible. They are the only two players we have that consistently finish.

I'm a bit concerned with us defensively. We just look too open and easy to get at. Villa were piss poor yet everytime they went forward looked dangerous. Last year it felt like when we were a goal up we were never going to give it away - this year it feels like we are really vulnerable. Dias hasn't looked the same since the Madrid collapse imo. Could be something to do with it.

I'd like to see more protection in midfield. We need another sitter next to Rodri. Id be happy to lose an attacker just to make us a bit more solid in the middle of the park. I was miffed we sold Lavia with him and Kalvin we would have two good sitters in the squad to pair with Rodri.

On a more positive note I think if we beat Spurs and Wolves, 20pts from 24 is a good start to the season. Spurs will be tough especially if we defend like we have been doing. Hopefully we can work on our defense frailties because if we do we are going to look pretty unstoppable.

Grealish mentioned something about this after we won the PL. He was saying he wished he could just go at players, but unless there's a clear path, we have to keep possession rather than take the risk. He also said hopefully he can be more himself this season.

It seems it's Pep's plan. Thinking about it, if we have an attacking left footed LB & a right footed right winger, I suppose it give the right back serious considerations regarding player cutting inside or going on the outside.

Walker and Foden both should be dropped. Both have started this season abysmally.

Walker is being asked to play a role he isn’t familiar with and doesn’t really match his skill set. He proved his worth (to any doubters) when we didn’t have him for the whole of the Real Madrid tie. He’s brilliant at defending his side of the pitch but is obviously finding it difficult having to come more inside and play the ball out more often. Not sure he deserves to be ‘dropped’ for an inferior player because of it.
