How do we resolve the Brexit mess?

I can’t quite put my finger on how the logic of our country being run by people not fit for purpose being given more power and free reign to destroy our working rights being the right thing to do.

Maybe our lettuce named friend could expand on why he thought incompetent politicians should be given more power.

He probably won’t though. I bet he’s stood in the pulse aisle of Tescos howling at anyone putting mung beans in their baskets.
That's who that weirdo was yesterday, it all makes sense now. I bought a pie just to keep his angry glare off me.

This, this and this some more.

The problem with Brexit is that it became an emotional issue, not a logical one, so the conditions for rejoining just don’t exist and won’t exist while it remains an emotional issue. The likelihood that we would be readmitted only on less favourable terms just adds to that.

However, whilst the country voted to leave the EU it did NOT vote to leave the single market. What we as a country need at the moment is undoubtedly for our economy to grow. Departure from the single market has had catastrophic effects on trade that could easily be reversed. Returning to the single market would not only stimulate growth, but it would address the Northern Ireland issues and would divert some pressure away from a Indyref 2.

But will they do it?

No. Because they’re zealots.

And will Labour do it, or commit to doing it?

No, because they’re too scared of the issue.

It remains, as it always was, a complete shit show.
Labour are avoiding the issue for sure but I think the strategy for the last 2 years has worked very well.

Starmer has not mentioned the B word for a long time. He has attacked Tories on everything else whilst avoiding anything that might seem 'unpatriotic'. He basically took all the sting out of the BJ attack lines. And he did it very effectively, he gave BJ nothing to come back with and PMQs was unbearable for Tories.

And on the Brexit front Labour have known that the Tories would get 4/5 years whatever they said and nothing would change on that front so far better to just let them own it. As the political world starts to come back round to cold economics Brexit is now the elephant in the room. LT will bang on about growth when we all know Brexit is the biggest drag factor. But still labour wont mention it. The strategy is to let everyone else work it out and start to call it out. Lets see if any tories break rank and mention the trading relations with the EU?

Labour stand ready to be a very pro EU party and maybe even get us back in to the SM but they wont raise this issue for a long time yet. Tories are drowning in their own shit policy and Labour are just going to leave them to it for as long as possible. And at the next GE campaign I would expect some fairly bland words around improving trade terms with the EU / benefits of regulatory alignment etc. Labour wont want to fight the next election on brexit but with a membership that is 80%+ pro EU membership, Labour voters also clealry pro EU and the wider population also moving in to the mid 50% pro EU the votes are there for it.

A like is not quite sufficient for this post.

Labour will have to oppose the madness of junking all EU regulations.

"These are not just EU regulations. These are H&S regulations, these are stopping you being poisoned regulations, these are your holiday rights regulations, these are regulations that stop lorry drivers driving while tired, these are regulations that should stop sewage being pumped into rivers and seas if the Tories made their privatised monpolies use more of the profits you pay for. And any business that wants to export to the EU will have to meet two sets of regulations - that's more paperwork, a drag on growth. Anyone who wants to get rid of these regulations is part of the anti-growth coalition."

True, but they will do it on the merits. The sewage issue is already a great example of the impact of removing 'red tape'.

I get all that, but this section I've quoted is the really significant bit.

What this bit means is that for tactical reasons they are accepting the damage that low growth will continue to do to the nation for the rest of the really long time you refer to.

What state do they want the economy to be in when they DO regain office?

They can only change things when in power. Its too toxic to campaign on so they will avoid the issue. I assume the economy will be so bad when they get there that a better trade deal with the EU will have a lot of support.
