He had the opportunity to rule out any change to defence spending and said nothing to suggest that the 3% commitment would be kept, which in the circumstances should be a flashing light to people about how bad things are about to get.Cut defence spending? With a war in Europe currently being fought? Where European countries are proposing a joint air defence shield to bolster security? Where are we in all of this if we cut back on an already hollowed out armed forces? And where would that leave the Defence Sec. Wallace?
You go back on one pledge and immediately you highlight the problems with doing so. The same with the NHS, education, social care. If we are trying to grow the economy then you have to invest in it. Maybe that is higher taxes or at least back to 20p tax rate, rather than 19p. Or back to the NIC rise, or borrowing to invest along with higher tax rates.
The irony of Brexit is that it requires higher state spending because we have to do a lot more than we used to. Previously, it wasn’t necessary or we sub-contracted out to the EU. We need more regulatory bodies, civil servants, administrators. We also demand better services, and public workers demand better pay, and it all needs paying for, which means tax rates at more European levels as well as growing the economy the best we can despite handicapping ourselves.
We have to finally face reality.
The odd thing is that everything is happening now on the tail of two years of furlough, where many businesses and individuals were kept afloat at the State‘s expense. That has then been followed by a commitment to help pay for energy bills, again at the State’s expense. Next year, if not sooner, many people are going to find it impossible to keep up with their mortgage payments, and the country could be faced with a collapse in the housing market. Does the State intervene again to save these people and the situation? I’m not saying that any of the above is wrong or should not have happened, just pointing out what has happened, what culture has been created, and what may be the direction of travel.
Agree with everything you say about the post-Brexit situation, but I still don’t think people are ready to face reality.
