The Conservative Party

No it didn’t. The £16 billion you speak of, presumably the North Sea transition deal, is the combined investment of the government and oil/gas companies to transition from oil/gas to renewables, £10 billion of which relates to Hydrogen production, £3 billion for carbon capture projects and £3 billion for replacing existing fossil fuel production with renewables. So it is a long way from the government investing £16 billion in oil / gas extraction.
Looking into it further you are correct but who is going to be the beneficiaries of this? England or Scotland in a post independence future?

The Green Alliance Think Tank has said this year the UK taxpayer has been subsidising extraction in North Sea Oil to the tune of billions.

The Green Alliance has today (22 February) published a new report warning that tax reliefs and subsidies that are paid to gas companies operating in the North Sea are wasting taxpayer money.

Some MPs have been vocal in their support for more drilling for oil and gas in the North Sea, especially given the spike in global gas prices. However, the Green Alliance states that opening new fields in the North Sea would be “uneconomic” given the “unstoppable rise” of clean technologies and the need to hit long-term climate goals.

“We highlight how tax relief, given to support UK oil and gas exploration, is skewing the market in favour of opening new fields for extraction, presenting a significant risk of stranded assets and a high cost burden for taxpayers and investors,” the report states.

As such, the Green Alliance predicts that oil and gas production will become a significant annual expenditure, with taxpayers set front the costs of an estimated £18.3bn in decommissioning figures.

The UK government would have grounds to recoup this.

It depends where those companies are setting up those projects.

They should never have dished out subsidies in the first place to companies making huge profits. They should recoup it by taxing those companies on their excess profits, particularly now.

Regarding decommissioning, surely the government that gained from a project should be responsible for decommissioning?

How does this prick account for those EU member states with higher productivity than us whilst also having the WTD?

Thats what all those brexidiots voted for and they wont even know it until they're told to work whatever hours their 'manager deems necessary in these extraordinary times'

The rich twats in this country want us to work harder for their money!

I completely and utterly agree.

I’ve been reading on it today because of the chat in the protestor thread and I think it’s high time they throw that money into renewables.

Hopefully they’ll be gone soon.

It seems a prerequisite of being a Tory (voter or politician) is that you must go around with your head permanently shoved up your own arsehole.

I'm a proud English man.

I've always wanted and argued for the union to stay together as I've always been proud of what the 4 countries have achieved and what they have stood for.

However, we English have let the union down and now with whats happened with the Tory party over the last 10 years I think we owe it to our cousins on these islands to have a vote about their own future.

I would personally hope they all vote to stay in the Union, but would honour their wishes if they choose to make their own way.

This is all because of a strange English obsession to vote for the Tory Party and the long con that was the Brexit vote.

Those who think this Tory government won’t continue to rip it apart are severely deluded. Spoke to 2 today who were of the opinion that what Truss and Kwarteng had done was a stupid but honest mistake. When I mentioned that I didn’t think it was a mistake and that this is what the current Cabinet want, just that it was done in such an excessive manner, the penny suddenly dropped.

As I said to them, at the moment they’re being governed by neolib’s who want nothing more than their money. The fact that they showed their hand so blatantly is the only reason Hunt was brought in, to shore up the government to allow them 2 more years to further deregulate everything that once made this country great.

Heard one guy call into LBC today who said in his local there were two what he said were Conservatives you could describe as "golf club bores" - they were discussing the Leadership race and one said he was voting for Truss- when asked why he said that Sunak was "too clever by half"!!!! Vote clowns - get a circus eh?
