Penalty Taker

Who should take penalties if Haaland is not on the pitch?

I think Gundo was taken off these way too early because we were in a period where our record was dreadful (even for us). We were cycling through takers cos everyone kept missing.

He's only missed two in his whole career - both for us - and has scored one under the highest pressure possible: the CL final. It's a no-brainer for him to take them when Haaland's not around

Has any penalty miss cost us recently? I can't think of any where desperately needed points were pee-ed up the goalpost!
West Ham at the end of last season. Set us up for a memorable final day, of course, but for the sake of my blood pressure I probably would have preferred if that pen had gone in.

Only in a penalty shoot for me, not open play. If saved he would have to scramble back and it is avoidable hassle

I’m also for Ederson having a go.

In my opinion, I don’t think your scenario is realistic. Ederson is not going to be trying to slot it with a cultured finish. He’s obviously going to just try and fucking hammer it as if he were taking a goal kick (ala Joe Hart versus Galaxy). No keeper saves them it’s just a matter of whether they’re on target or not.

The bigger risk is if it clatters off the crossbar and bounces back into play, which I think is very small.

People worry about this risk but has it ever actually happened in any game where a keeper has taken a free kick or pen? Genuinely curious - there’s been plenty of opportunities as have been cited.

Was that the Sergio one? I counted that as beyond the recent past! And wasn't the West Ham game the outcome of the penalty shoot out lottery?
2019? Or the 2020 one IG v Spurs when we got beat 2-0 in the end and killed the league chances completely.

The Serg one v Chelsea in 2021 meant we won the league on a non-match day and a massive anti-climax in lock down, or KDB v Liverpool when we were well behind them early in the season.

The Mahrez misses in the last 2 games cost £3.81m

I would rather give it to an injured Haaland as it is now. So if Haaland is either injured or rested, but able to stand on his feet for 3 minutes, I would bring him on just for taking that penalty and then sub him as we are City and will never get 2 pens.

Or get Balotelli back to either take the pens we get awarded, or becomes our penalty specialist manager.

Seriously it’s a bit sad that such a good squad as ours are short of players with the bravery to step up and put away the penalty. And such a high standard manager and management team are not able to lift this.
