Brentford (H) | Post-Match Thread

Awful performance and result today, not the first bad performance/result under Peps reign and I'm sure it won't be the last. Peps record with City however is pretty impressive. I like many of you get frustrated with Pep in certain games, especially ones like today and Champions League final etc., but let's not forget that we have the best manager in world football, guiding us to our most successful period in our history. Games like today and to be fair a number of other games this season highlight some frailties in our squad, however previous squads have not been without fault and those seasons haven't turned out too badly. I can understand fans frustrations and I too was very frustrated watching that and watching Pep do nothing to change it, however, every season has blips like these...it's time to stand behind the team and give Pep and the boys our full support for the second half of the season.

Please stop picking Gundogan and KDB in the same midfield. It doesn't work.

Gundogan and Silva or KDB and Silva.

Also feel for Jack and Alvarez. It seems that form is not rewarded in this team and it just constantly chops and changes so we don't find that perfect rhythm that Newcastle and Arsenal seem to be in ATM.
Can maybe add Rico to that. Good shout for him to have played today too, a natural playing in his position

Frustrating game today. Kevs radar was a bit wide of the mark and with that goes a lot of the creativity. To many hopeful crosses, ridiculous shots including defenders shooting with their wrong foot from 25 yards.

For me the worst part was a few players were not necessarily out of form but were attempting half hearted challenges, tracking back, pressing. Regardless of the World Cup that is not acceptable.

The defence is poor, when dominating possession, suffocating the opposition the clean sheets only mask the failings of the back five. Once we reach the latter stages of the Champs lge it will be the usual 3 goals conceded each match and left with a mountain to climb.

Nope. Just that any claims we’ve gone backwards can’t be reasonably made at this point in a season. We’d be making that claim every single year otherwise since we start below our best and finish so strong most of the time.

Now, you might not have noticed but we’re also playing a condensed season. Most of the top sides in Europe aren’t at their best. We’ve played 6 CL games already in a time we’d usually only have played 4. Liverpool, Real, Barca, Bayern, Juve, as well as others far below their best. Arsenal as it happens don’t have that on their schedule and can afford to change most of their team in the Europa.

When you add that in to missing key defenders, evolving how we play etc, I’d say it was incredible unfair to state we’ve gone backwards at this stage, and also that history probably shows it’ll be proven incorrect as well.
If our performances develop in the same manner each season - starting poorly before getting better - and it’s the same pattern every season (as you say), then any year on year comparison at any point in the season would in fact be valid.

It’s not a very difficult concept. I’m expecting us to play better in the second half of the season, but I still think our performances have disappointed relative to the same point of last season given the more favourable fixtures this time around.

Also, you might not have noticed that we’ve only played one League Cup game so far compared to two at the same point last year, so the point regarding the CL, although still valid, is less relevant than you state. You could also argue that last year’s group including both PSG and Leipzig offered a much sterner and taxing challenge than this year’s with Seville and Copenhagen (alongside an average Dortmund side), who were both poor quality.

Chelsea not up to much. The matches v Arsenal will be decisive.
I don’t know about that.. We still have to see Arsenal after the World Cup and under huge pressure in January and February
I just have a feeling that they have already peaked, and a decline is coming.
If the continue with their form, then yes our games vs Arsenal would potentially decide the title

But why is pep not making sub ?There is no way we win the prem last season if he did not sub in sterling/ gundo in the last game tho?

You’re being reactionary and you’ll be proven wrong. At the end of the season you‘ll be like ‘wow, amazing, they proved me wrong. Shows what I know’ etc. Today was a shit performance, just like say Palace at home was a shit performance last season. For what it’s worth last week against Fulham was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen from 10 men. Wouldn’t be surprised if half of them had one eye on the World Cup today.

Just watched the highlights even though it is painfull! WHY didn't Kev just take the yellow and stop the Brenford counter that led to the winner?

I was working today and have only seen snippets of the match and can’t comment on the match as a whole but from what’s been said Brentford deserved the win however, speaking to my brother earlier and from a snippet of the first goal, was Toney offside from the free kick? If not, fair enough, if he was in an offside position before he headed the goal, i.e. from the free kick, why wasn’t it brought back? Can someone enlighten me?

All of them had two eyes on it and so haaland was completely useless.

I see some complaining about pushing for the win while drawing.

We did that against Fulham and turned 1 point into 3.
Today, we did it against their local neighbors and lost 1 point.

I’ll do the math for you…we ended up 1 point ahead of where we would have been by ”settling” for 2 draws!

If THIS TEAM isn’t pushing for a win, at home, against Brentford, then what’s it all mean?

They did us on the break…again! It’s what teams do to us. HOWEVER, that is a function of being the most attacking, high goals scoring, most successful team in the Premier League for the last decade!

What troubles me is the individual performances of some players, because Pep’s system relies on a cohesive unit, where one passenger can bring the whole thing crashing down, and Pep’s seeming reluctance to change what is clearly not working!

He left it waaay too late to bring Bernardo in off the wing! Who wastes one of the best midfielders IN THE WORLD as a touchline hugger, when he’s got Grealish and Mahrez on the bench?

Who chooses to push Gundogan forward when he brings Bernardo into midfield alongside Rodri, when you’ve got fresher legs on the bench?

Their game was ALL about long high balls for knock ons, and punts down the line for one of the rabbits to chase, which ANYONE should have known, yet of our THREE most aggressive Centre Backs ZERO were played at Centre Back!

indeed, their first goal was a result of first Akanji being beaten to a header by Mee, then Laporte being beaten to a header by Toney….and them all being played onside by Stones playing Right Back…while Ederson neither came nor stayed and got “lobbed” by the header!

It was a shitshow all around!!!

And, by the time they did actually score, if it hadn’t been for Ederson, it’d have ALREADY been 2-0 and that would have been 3-0 down INSIDE 16 MINS!!!

Is there ANY chance we can get a player who can play RIGHT WING AND COME INSIDE IF PLAYED ON THE LEFT WING??? ANYONE??

When Bernardo is your Right Winger and Stones is your supporting Right Back, crosses are not really on the agenda, are they?

It’s no wonder Haaland prowled around all day with a face like a slapped arse! Best forward in the world and you can’t even get him the ball???

Oh well, enough of that shit! I knew it was in the cards after about 5 minutes, when they were plastering us, and the Commentator said

- they haven’t won away from home all season,
- they hadn’t beaten us since 1935,
- A City win would break a century’s old record
- A goal for Haaland would have been his 200th goal for club and country in his 200th appearance

Same old story of Typical City rearing its ugly head at the wrong moment!

Perhaps. It's a marathon not a sprint is the trite expression. It might be more akin to an ultra marathon with the world cup interlude.

Been saying it for a long time, if Grealish is on the bench we haven’t got the pace in midfield to break the lines, you need players to create space by taking people on.
Well said. Grealish (Alvares too) takes people on. It's time Jack started regularly. Apart from being entertaining, he creates that uncertainty in the opposition. Hence the number of times he is fouled.

Agreed. But one fundamental error in your analysis......

You did the maths, not the math.
