The problem is that we are a tribalistic species. Any empathy that we feel is limited to those we identify with, and God help anyone who falls outside those parameters.
Plus, our moral and political views are largely founded on pre-rational intuitions that are themselves a product of evolutionary psychology, an artefact of tribal living, and therefore inappropriate for the global challenges we face in this century, which include climate change, the drafting of trade regulations, the preservation and protection of the environment and animal species, the future of nuclear power and the risks posed by nuclear proliferation, economic migrancy, the maintenance of employment rights etc.
Unfortunately, the political right are adept at tapping into those aforementioned gut feelings and the malignant prejudices that arise from them.
Am therefore very pessimistic about our prospects for survival. Like it or not, we now exist in a state of global interdependency but we are very poorly equipped psychologically to recognise that.
I do not expect us to last much longer because of this.
