Motion - the country is completely broken

I have never voted Tory and I certainly won’t be doing so at the next election. Unless there is a major change in Labour, starting with its leader, I won’t be voting Labour for the very first time. Both parties will lead the country to ruin. One will get us there slightly faster.
It's the latest thing.

Allthesamery.

In a democracy, the people get they government they deserve. At the next election, the options available to you will be an incompetent Tory government or a grossly incompetent Tory-lite government. Meanwhile, the media will be telling you to celebrate the fact you have a “choice”, whilst China supplants the US and western economies continue to recede.
My constituency MP is Nadhim Zahawi and at the last GE he got around 60% of the vote. It might drop to 50% at the next GE. What fucking choice do I have?

One has already lead the country to ruin.

Who are you going to vote for then?

I’m sorry mate I don’t agree with this, obviously there are exceptions to the rules but it’s carefully crafted.

My views have changed massively over the years. I would say my values were always caring, hard working but my outlook was TV & newspapers for years. Then I started reading & listening to different forms, how I think changed that changed where I got my news.

My dad would get his paper & he’ll see Corbyn next to Gerry Adams & that’s it. As easy as that.
In fairness though that would be your dad's fault not the paper. Everyone and I mean everyone has a bias. It's not hard to work out which papers lean which way. If people believe everything any media outlet tells them or a politician then that's either laziness or the message is one they want to believe.

Come election time the Tories and Labour will come out with all sorts of shit and so will the media. Now the Tories keep getting in but this time they won't.

Have people now become less brain washed? Have they done their homework?

Or is the truth the things that were happening to other people that they chose to ignore has now arrived on their doorstep?

I'll not be voting Labour come the next election, though I suspect not for the same reasons as you.

When you state......

You've no idea whether Labour will be grossly incompetent, I've no idea whether they'll be competent or not, nobody knows.

I worked with a government department from 2001 to 2017. I'm no fan of Blair and Brown but they were political Titans compared to this lot and on the whole government worked, there were the odd ministerial scandals, but that government was a paragon of virtue and a well oiled machine compared to this shambles.

Competence has nothing to do with policy. When you make a statement like grossly incompetent that's your politics showing, nothing more.

True but if you’re not politically motivated & get the paper for the racing & the tits but read every page then that’s how they get you. Not you & not me…….anymore but clearly that’s how they did it.

How many people really know much about Politics? & don’t they know it.

Stratford-upon-Avon?

Then you do have a choice...

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer. The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, And by opposing end them?

Lovely place to visit, what's it like living there?
Live about ten miles north. It’s amazing having towns like Stratford, Warwick and Leamington nearby. Alcester is quite quaint. Birmingham about half an hour on a good day is handy too.

It’s pretty safe and has some beautiful villages and countryside.

Because of the touristy nature of those three towns the area tends to punch above its weight, restaurant wise. I’d say Warwick and Leamington were better for a pub crawl than Stratford.

The people are ok, but nowhere near as friendly as Brummies who I absolutely love.

So, yeah - it‘s a really nice place to live.

My MP is a **** though.

Therein lies the real tale of why politics is broken in this country. The fact we can have (and have had) “wrong winner” elections (party with highest vote % not being the “winner”) tells you how utterly shite our system is. Turkeys don’t vote for Christmas so it ain’t changing soon.

The problem is that we are a tribalistic species. Any empathy that we feel is limited to those we identify with, and God help anyone who falls outside those parameters.

Plus, our moral and political views are largely founded on pre-rational intuitions that are themselves a product of evolutionary psychology, an artefact of tribal living, and therefore inappropriate for the global challenges we face in this century, which include climate change, the drafting of trade regulations, the preservation and protection of the environment and animal species, the future of nuclear power and the risks posed by nuclear proliferation, economic migrancy, the maintenance of employment rights etc.

Unfortunately, the political right are adept at tapping into those aforementioned gut feelings and the malignant prejudices that arise from them.

Am therefore very pessimistic about our prospects for survival. Like it or not, we now exist in a state of global interdependency but we are very poorly equipped psychologically to recognise that.

I do not expect us to last much longer because of this.

The last constituency I lived in, Birmingham Ladywood, the sitting Labour MP, Shabana Mahmood, who is a half decent MP tbf, gets about 80% of the vote! 80% ffs. Have usually voted Green and Lib Dem in elections there, will probably vote Libdem here, but it’s a complete waste of fucking time.

As you say, it’s a complete fucking joke, and no, turkeys ain’t voting for Christmas.
