Do you support the RMT?

That wouldn’t go down well. Losing an odd couple of days pay here and there is one thing. Stopping all overtime on a semi- permanent basis would be different level for a lot of staff.
When I was a rep, our main concern was to ensure that we were correctly staffed. We rarely were, especially in the summer months when the air traffic was at its' peak. In order to keep pressure on management, we negotiated an overtime rate that was prohibitive unless they were desperate. Much as I support the union's stance, they have to decide on their principles and priorities. If they're coming from a safety standpoint, you would never want tired or fatigued staff carrying out safety orientated tasks like driving trains, track maintenance or in my industry controlling or piloting planes. Full staffing should be the union's baseline, as it seems to be when it comes to redundancy but, if you're right apparently not necessarily when it comes to overtime.

I just like to know what side of the debate somebody is coming from. The statement is quite innocuous but it’d be interesting to see if it was from a worker or corporate point of view.

Its the law - not a POV.

A contract of work my state you will be required to do some extra time but its still voluntary and has to ensure that by doing the extra hours the hourly rate does not become lower than the minimum wage ( ie needs to be paid at time and a half or more ) - don't forget this also helps the employer as in the case of severance pay they can revert to contracted hours not hours worked to calculate

From what I understand the two main rail unions have always been in favour and have pushed for staff levels being at levels where overtime would be needed only in abnormal circumstances and the companies employ enough staff to run the job without overtime in regular circumstances.

What the union’s official policy is and what a fair chunk of their members want are not always perfectly aligned though.

For train drivers on £50K + they’re probably in the main quite happy to work a flat week and enjoy the time off. But for a lot of those on low to mid £20Ks, they pretty much rely on the overtime to make end meet.

“The railway runs on overtime” is an expression I’ve heard staff say more times over the years than I could keep count of.

Fuck me, I hope he goes soon and we start moving forward.
He really is a rancid little snakey ****.
Can't see him surviving another mauling by that committee ... just hope he lasts long enough so we can enjoy the spectacle!
The question is will a new CEO mean change of approach from their side. I suppose all we can do is deliver another yes vote.

Someone with experience in the business would be a start, not sure how I apply though.

The new offer is a joke.

9% for me to accept being made redundant on Jan 1st 2024.

The proposal; If members accept it. They will also agree to RMT having no collective bargaining. The union will be consulted on any changes be it contractually or industrially and no powers to stop it.

Some senior full time officers want us to accept the deal. Mick Lynch and other officers were told at a public meeting this to get fucked. He understood the sentiment from the members which he was elected to represent. So expect more strikes. I have a feeling there will be a national day of action on the day of the March budget. Possibly the closest thing possibly to a legal national general strike.

Meeting with Rail Minister

This morning (26 January) the ASLEF General Secretary, Assistant General Secretary and EC President met with Rail Minister Huw Merriman MP.

There was a full and frank discussion on the manner in which the industry made their recent proposal (dated 6 January), which we rejected.

We have said that we will continue talks when we have received a commitment from the industry that they will adhere to the agreed framework.

We will keep you informed of developments.

Yours in solidarity,

Mick Whelan
General Secretary

Basically saying we will talk when you do things properly; not send an 'offer' scribbled onto a PostIt note, attached to a brick, lobbed through the window of a disued outhouse in the backyard of a derelict terraced house, sometime over a Bank Holiday Weekend whilst triumphantly broadcast in the Tory-sychophantic media that a generous offer was put to the Union.

From the last couple of posts the wankers are treating people like idiots and wanting the turkeys to vote for Christmas.

Astoundingly shite, which you’d expect from this government.

Was thinking something similar only last week. When you consider the amount of mandates for strike action that are currently 'live' across the NHS, education, railways, civil service etc., the opportunity is there. Add to that the fire service (result announced on Monday) plus our (CWU) second ballot (mid Feb) March would be the ideal time. Never factored in budget day but can't think of a better day for coordinated action.
