Shamima Begum

That was what most people thought before her case went to the Supreme Court.

But the Supreme Court said (I paraphrase) that having the ability to seek Bangladeshi citizenship was enough for the power to be invoked lawfully. As has been argued above, it means anyone Jewish or with an Irish grandparent would be capable of being deprived of their UK citizenship.

Surprising as that may seem, the Supreme Court is the ultimate arbiter of what the law is in the UK.

Shamima Begum was therefore not rendered stateless by teh UK's actions, because at the time she was 19 and could have applied for Bangladeshi citizenship. She chose not to and now she's too late (Bangladeshi law says you have to apply before 21).
Seems a bit of a technicality for making someone a citizen of nowhere.
I don’t see the arguments as any different to the one certain people are happy to make about Pakistani men and vulnerable under age white girls who are victims of grooming. Seems you can be a victim at 15, if it suits, but also that you cannot be a victim at 15, if it suits…..

Sorry what are you on about?
You know, you take a subject then become a Tap Room Lawyer after researching on Google. As I’ve said before your posts are excruciatingly painful on detail, they’re not intuitive or based on accumulated knowledge, you are good at interpreting information in a way that suits your pseudo intellectual persona but you ain’t fooling me.

Right so instead of derailing the thread with insults, tell me what part of the actual substance of my comment you think is wrong.

Do you think that he googled the Jewish right of return today or this week otherwise it would be based on accumulated knowledge wouldn't it...?

You ought to point the hangers and floggers on this thread to that google thing you’re on about although probably pointless as despite some actual facts being presented there’s no shifting some folk from their hateful stances. Doesn’t just apply to this thread

Watched a documentary on Iplayer last night.

Stupid fuckers all of them. Gained fuck all and lost everything.

Pregnant 5 times ....lost all her babies.

She will never be right in the head after all that shit she has experienced.

Not the sharpest tool in the box either.

I worry that people are reacting on emotions without considering the legal ramifications of this case. I don't have one shred of sympathy for her no one will convince me that she didn't know what she was doing and getting involved with but I do believe she should be brought back and face trial here. Even if you believe she deserves this decision what about the next person it happens too who may be innocent. I admit I don't understand the legal in's and outs of this case but to deny someone a fair trial is not right to me and the minute politicians sticky fingers are involved then that is scary.
there was a young girl brought back , jailed for three years and de radicalised and set free , there is obviously more to the begum threat than we know else she would be back here the same

And you think they can de-radicalise this one? Impossible I'd say based on some of the things she is still saying

When it comes to the potential of terrorist attack deaths its best not to take risks.

I knew a guy, Ron Fiddler. Changed his name to something Islamic whilst I was working with him back in the 90s. Tried to convince us to turn to Islam, none of us would entertain it, but he took it well and even laughed at himself over it. Nonetheless he remained dedicated to Islam.

Next thing I knew he was in guantanamo Bay on charges of terrorism after the Americans invaded Afghanistan post 9/11.

He was the softest lad I knew, really nice, not terrorist material at all. He had told us he was going on a religious journey trip before he left so we never really believed he was a terrorist.

Eventually he was released from guantanamo, one of the last ones released due to legal battles and the Americans refusal to believe he was not a terrorist. They wouldn't believe he'd juson been on a sight seeing trip in Afghanistan and got caught up in things.

He came back to Britain, family welcome, parade, compensation etc. So much injustice he suffered etc.... Next thing he's driving a suicide bomb into some building. Wtf, I couldn't believe he was a terrorist after all, he was such a nice lad. But he had killed so many people after the British govn itself had lobbied for his release!

Just don't gamble with people's lives. It's harsh, but Begum is going to be the total target of the terrorist organisation she wanted to join, they would love the chance to show off their ideological strength and ability to cause terror. Bottom line is we don't know, and when you don't know don't take risks with people's lives.

That's my thoughts today, might change tomorrow.
