i'd rather keep Phillips than sign Rice. He may cover a few positions but he doesn't excel in any of them. It is the type of midfielder we aren't short of as such.
Not an allrounder. He has strength but little else.Onana at Everton? If they go down could be available at a great price
I have been really impressed with him whenever I have seen him, I think he's got a lot to his game, and would flourish in our side. Having said that I would prefer Bellingham, but fear he might be going elsewhere. Philips has been very disappointing, but I never wanted to buy him.i'd rather keep Phillips than sign Rice. He has hardly played and if he was a liablilty Pep still wouldn't of given him 35 mins vs Bournemouth and 90 mins vs Bristol City. Rice would be wasted in our current setup and wouldn't add much to the team.Rice is a far better player, there isn't any doubt about that.
If in an ideal world they cost the same price, I'd take Rice all day every day. He would be a good squad player and understudy to Rodri. Kalvin Phillips is becoming a liability at the moment and eventually Rodri will run himself into the ground due to amount of games he's having to play.
However, I wouldn't pay anywhere near 100m for Rice. I'd rather throw the bag at Bellingham, Gvardiol and Kvaratskelia/Mitoma.
Sounds good to meI reckon Phillips goes if we sign Rice. Bernardo goes if we sign Bellingham and Gundogan goes if we get Kovacic.
Philips has only played against lower level opposition, even then he's looked suspect. Rodri needs to be rested and there's currently very few games where Pep can chance playing Philips. Perhaps if we draw a lower level team in the next round of the FA cup Philips will get another 90 minutes, but Pep clearly isn't happy him starting against a top PL side.He has hardly played and if he was a liablilty Pep still wouldn't of given him 35 mins vs Bournemouth and 90 mins vs Bristol City. You cant defend in a 3–2 formation without wingers effectively becoming wingbacksPeps wet dream is for his 3-2 defensive formation to be successful. Two progressive passers at the back, along with a leader and two defensive midfielders in Rice and Rodri would make us solid. I don’t really agree with it as I want the 17/18 City back.

One of the 2 will always have to be an inverted full back. Not 2 holding midfielders
Otherwise you have 3 on 3 at the back given most other teams play 3 up
If he was that suspect he wouldn't of gotten a sniff against Bournemouth and Bristol City. As for playing against a top side he has next season to have a real crack and the way Pep was talking there is a chance he could still play a part this time around.Philips has only played against lower level opposition, even then he's looked suspect. Total agree sideways or back passes was his thing at the World Cup. Can’t think those were the orders from Sir waistcoat but I could be wrong :)I think i see some players different. I dont rate rice. I think hes great for west ham. I watched him for england and the amount of times i saw stones get frustrated with him. He seems a dippers or arsenal signing where you dont have to be that technical to play in their midfields. I dont see him as peps technical player. im open to being wrong but i just dont see him good enough for our midfield.
its totally a gareth southgate thing but my issue wasnt the sideways passing it was when stones was wanting an option to pass into midfield and rice wasnt showing for the ball.Total agree sideways or back passes was his thing at the World Cup.
