England wasting one of the most talented squads ever assembled on Southgate

Unforgiveable.

Only France has more depth currently and they have been to last 2 WC finals. England massively underacheiving.
Beware the Happy Clappers will be here to tell you how wrong you are and how amazing Engerland are in 3...2...

Said it all along that the waistcoat wouldn't get a proper managerial job... That's why he took the renewed contract

Total yes man who'll win fuck all despite the wealth of talent at his disposal....

People think that it's acceptable to get to finals and not win... That's BS

Embarrassing thread for self entitled anti England fans that only really care about there own teams players being picked and don’t want England to succeed.

Southgate has one of the highest win percentages, took us to final of the Euros only losing on penalties and to a World Cup semi final - he has achieved far more than pretty much every manager since Alf Ramsey.

Going into the tournaments he has picked one of the youngest squads and starting line ups in the world, has managed to keep the unity and team spirit within the camp and has cemented himself as Englands manager after our performances at tournaments.

The reality is no England manager will ever please , it’s a massive ask to win a major tournament but even if we did , whoever is the manager will still get criticised, that’s the reality of modern day internet fans - all crying, whinging and moaning constantly mainly because they have a gripe against certain players being picked.

Are they? How many England players are actually’world class’? We’ve got several at the level below, but France have the same number plus a few genuinely world class ones. That makes the difference. We always big up our domestic hero‘s. When you look at those from the past that we thought were world class: Gerard, lampard, scholes, owen, Lineker, Gasgoine, hoddle etc etc - actually, compared to teams we eventually went out to, they just weren’t good enough.
foden is the first Englishman I’ve seen with that innate natural ability those players above lacked and other top country‘s have had. And yet still Southgate doesn’t recognise it - that’s why we fail.

Must be a Gareth thing, Southgate has done to England what Taylor has done to City women.

indefensible - never won owt, never will - talentless box-ticking wanker
A bit of a harsh finish to that post imho.
I actually think he’s a good man; a decent bloke who thinks carefully about what he does, who speaks well publicly and is probably very fair with his players.
What I’m not sure he is though, is a great coach. Let’s put it like this, it will be fascinating to see which club job (if any) he goes to when this current job ends.

He’ll go to Manchester City Women and finish 6th. Gareth Taylor had finished 5th the previous season before going off to manage a CFG club in Bhutan.

OK, I retract the "wanker"... for now

the rest is valid
and what would you want from an England coach, FFS? Your standards must be as low as a BPH piss

To all those criticising Southgate: name an available manager, who could do better.

I’m not saying that he is the best in the world, but he’s doing a decent job.

would you appoint...
Dean Smith
Nathan Jones
Javi Gracia?
no, of course not - but that's what we did - we appointed someone who took a mediocre club, made them worse and relegated them.
Fkn astonishing support on here from people who must read the Guardian more than they go to football matches
