Glasgow and Manchester are quite similar cities imo. Sprawling concrete/ brick jungles, miles and miles of dull or dirty or just shit, but in each there are small islands of real beauty. Mrs reckoned the shopping was better in Glasgow.

I travel a bit for work. The all time lowlights are Hartlepool and Luton, both dystopias trapped in the early Thatcher period, both full of people with grey, defeated faces.

Middlesbrough. Was there in 02/3 ish. (We lost 3-1, the Elk scored). When we exited the train station we were genuinely aghast that folk lived there. It almost made Glasgow look salubrious.

I was there too. That was the game where Joey Barton was on the bench and was called upon to make his City debut only to find some local scrote had nicked his shirt so he couldn't come on.

And yes, I was shocked at how shit Middlesbrough as a town is. It even manages to make Hartlepool look half decent.

Middlesbrough, Burnley, Luton, Rotherham, Blackburn, Hull, Scunthorpe, Reading, Merthyr Tydfil, Newport, Port Talbot and Stoke are just a few that spring to mind immediately.

Edit: Add Huddersfield, Swindon, Margate and Ledbury to the list. Margate and Ledbury are inbred central.

Like everywhere else. Some shit bits and if you look for them, some nice bits. You probably see the worst of a town when you’re just bobbing in and out for a football match though.

Norton, just down the road is a lovely little place and Yarm, is a nice, affluent place just a few minutes away.

Once when I was about 19 me and a few mates piled into this van with a tent and decided to go camping for a night in what we thought was Sherwood Forest. We pitched the tent on Sat afternoon and saw on the map the nearest town was Worksop ! So off we all go for a pub crawl round Worksop, check out the chicks etc...
What a bunch of weird fuckers inhabited that place in the 70s, as the night went on and the locals got more and more pissed it got much much worse, death stares, ignored at the bar till all the local freaks got served. Just a very strange and worrisome atmosphere in every pub we stumbled in.
I swear we were actually scared going back to the tent, it was like they'd all been smoking crack, I attempted to confer with a couple of locals who (I think) told me that Common hobbies in Worksop include getting shitfaced and hitting someone with a bit of wood, committing suicide, and intergenerational welfare dependency. As it got close to midnight I fully expected the night might play out like one of those movies where 4 lads go camping and disappear, forever. I feared we'd be woken at 3 am with a sort of KKK gathering around our tent..

If someone ate a shit and then shat it out again, 70s Worksop would be that second shit. In mathematical terms, shit times shit equals Worksop. It’s the shit in a shit pie if the pastry was also shit.

Reminds me of the case a few years ago: a young couple had been biking and camping across the world, travelling through many politically dangerous areas and places with genuine poverty. Never any bother, often found people to be genuinely friendly and helpful.
They eventually arrived in the UK and travelled to the Sherwood Forest area. Camped close to Worksop and woke up to find their bikes stolen and their precious photo and travel diary also gone.
